Cost
A cost is a property of skills. To use or trigger a skill, its cost must be paid. Most skills have a mana cost by default, though costs of life, energy shield, or rage are also possible. Reservations are not costs.[1] Soul requirements for Vaal skills are not costs.[2]
Mechanics
All skills have costs, even if those costs are zero.[3] Similar to other stats, costs may be modified by flat additions and subtractions, as well as by multipliers like increased, reduced, less, and more. Support gems are the most common cost multiplier; each support gem modifies a cost multiplicatively.
Upfront costs are all costs that are not paid per second. This distinction is necessary because some effects cannot apply to per-second costs found on Link skills. Channelling skills pay an upfront cost each channelling tick.[4]
Costs are paid, which typically causes resources to be spent. Losing resources through other means, such as sacrificing with Dark PactDark PactMinion, Spell, AoE, Chaining, Chaos, Nova
