Penance Brand is a spell that creates a brand at the target location, which when attached to an enemy adds Energy stacks which cause the enemy to explode at 20 Energy.
Energy: Penance Brands apply a stack of Energy to targets they are attached to on each activation, up to a cap of 20. Upon reaching 20 Energy, an explosion will occur at the monster's location, dealing damage to it and nearby enemies. After the explosion, Energy resets to 0 and all attached brands are removed.

If an enemy dies before accumulating 20 Energy, the brands will detach and deal no damage, being unable to explode. As the Energy count is stored on the target instead of the brand, so if the brand re-attaches to a new enemy it will have to start from 0 again.[1]
Unlike Penance Brand's transfigured gem counterparts, Brands Attach to a new Enemy each time they Activate, no more than once every 0.3 secondsBrand Mastery would result in Penance Brand dealing no damage unless activation speed is less than 0.005 seconds.
Multiple brands: If multiple Penance Brands are attached to an enemy simultaneously (via Runebinder), each brand will add Energy stacks towards the 20 cap. Only a single explosion occurs regardless of the number of brands; however, increasing the number of atttached brands does increase the relative rate of Energy increase.
Duration: Once attached, Penance Brand does not have an attached duration and will remain on the enemy until the enemy dies, the brand is recalled, or the brand is removed.
Casting speed of the brand itself, as well as its activation frequency, can be increased by cast speed modifiers. Scaling cast speed will affect the rate at which Energy is added, and therefore the delay before enemies explode.

Note that helmet enchantments are no longer obtainable since version 3.23.0 and can only be obtained in permanent leagues as already enchanted items from before this patch.
It no longer spreads energy to nearby enemies or causes regular pulses while at maximum energy.
It now immediately causes an explosion when the branded enemy reaches maximum energy.
It no longer causes an explosion when it expires or detaches from an enemy.
It no longer has an attached duration - instead, it remains attached to the enemy until it reaches maximum energy, then expires immediately once the explosion occurs.
It no longer gains damage or radius per energy.
It now deals 177-265 base Physical Damage at gem level 1 (previously 18-27), scaling up to 2541-3811 gem level 20 (previously 170-254), has an added damage effectiveness of 570% (previously 40%), activates every 0.1s while attached (previously every 0.5s) and has a base radius of 2.8 metres (previously 0.8 metres).
It now deals 30% less Damage with Ailments.
Quality now causes the skill to deal +0-10% more Damage with Hits against Branded Enemies, instead of providing 0-10% increased Area of Effect.
