A righteous fire totem.

Totems are a type of creature. They can appear as both monsters and as allies, and are a type of proxy when summoned by skills.

Mechanics

Totems are damageable objects. They have their own resources (e.g. life) and stats (e.g. resistance, action speed). They die when their life is reduced to zero, and do not leave corpses.

Most totems use spells. Ballista Totems are subtypes that use ranged skills.

Interaction with auras

Totems have limited interaction with auras and aura-like effects.[1]

  • Allied totems may be buffed by aura skills that grant defensive stats, but they cannot be buffed offensively, and are unaffected by Nearby allies have… modifiers like You and nearby Allies have Tailwind or Nearby Allies have +10 Fortification.
  • Enemy totems can be affected by auras that deal damage or curse, but cannot be debuffed by skills like Flesh and StoneFlesh and StoneSpell, Aura, AoE, Stance, Physical

. Summoning a totem counts as using a skill, but not as attacking or casting. Totems summoned by skills are not party members or minions.

Several stats are involved in summoning totems:

  • Totem placement range determines how far a player can place a totem. Ballista totems have a significantly lower placement range than spell and ancestral totems.
  • Totem placement speed determines the length of the summoning animation. It is 0.6s by default.[2] Ballista totems are significantly faster, at 0.35s.[3] This can be affected by modifiers to totem placement speed as well as the character’s action speed.
  • Totem duration determines the lifetime of the totem. Its base value varies depending on the skill. It is only affected by modifiers to Totem Duration, not Skill Effect Duration.
  • Skills with cooldowns will consume a cooldown per summoned totem. These skills can only summon multiple totems if they have multiple cooldowns charged.
  • When a totem is placed it has a non-modifiable activation time. This activation happens between the totem being placed and the totem starting to cast. For Spell Totem SupportSpell Totem SupportSupport, Spell, Totem

Skills that summon a totem cannot be triggered. Traps and mines can summon totems on behalf of the player, but totems cannot throw traps or mines, or summon other totems. Creating a skill with all three proxy behaviours will result in a skill that causes the player to throw a mine, which throws a trap, which summons a totem.

Summoned totems die when their life is reduced to 0, when the player dies, when their duration expires, and when they are replaced by summoning a new totem beyond a skill’s maximum.

Totem limit

By default, a player can have only one (1) active totem at a time. This is a global limit among all skills. Summoning a totem with the maximum number of totems active will cause the oldest living totem to be destroyed. It’s possible for one skill to have a higher maximum than others. As long as it does not exceed its own maximum, this does not affect totems from other skills.

Offensive stats

Totems are a type of proxy: a separate object that has access to one of the player's skills. The player's skill is used with the player's stats, not the totem's. This means:

  • Totems use all of the player’s stats that affect their skills, including damage, area of effect, speed, on-hit effects, and modifiers that apply or modify debuffs. While totems are not 'you', many stats worded as 'you' or 'your' still apply to the skill used by a totem.[4][5]
    • Totems do not snapshot: any changes to the player’s stats immediately affect skills used by totems.[6]
  • Totem’s own offensive stats never affect the skill they use.[7] In many cases, totems are prevented from gaining their own offensive modifiers to avoid confusion, as they would not be functional. They cannot gain rage, frenzy or power charges, offensive buffs, and are ignored by offensive auras.[8][9]
    • In the rare case a totem deals damage outside its skill, like Hinekora, Death's Fury's on-totem-kill explosion, that damage will not scale with the player's stats.[10] (Not to be confused with Totems Explode on Death effects, which is damage from the player.)
  • Totems may only possess one skill. They cannot trigger additional skills granted by support gems like Impending Doom SupportImpending Doom SupportSupport, Hex, Spell, AoE, Chaos, Trigger

  • Summoning a totem may have a cost, but skills cost nothing when used by totems.[14]

Totems do have their own object-level properties, such as action speed. They can be chilled or frozen individually. This also means totems are unaffected when the player is chilled, frozen, or buffed by Tailwind.[15]

Each totem independently recovers cooldowns.

Totems have their own range within which the totem will target enemies with its skill. Totem range varies per totem type, is not affected by modifiers to area of effect, and is only used if the range of the skill isn't smaller. To illustrate: an Ice SpearIce SpearCritical, Spell, Projectile, Cold

Defensive stats

Totem enemies

Totem enemies can be treated as regular enemies in most respects, although stationary and with a non-standard interaction with aura(-like) debuffs.[1]

  • Summoned Totems are now deleted when the player moves very far away from those totems. This caused issues with the Hierophant skill "Ritual of Awakening" where you would receive less damage per active totem. Those totems would be very far away and unable to attack or cast yet would still penalise the player's damage.
  • Fixed a bug where players could have multiple Offerings active at once through the use of traps, totems or mines.

  • Totem placement can now be sped up with a new Totem Placement Speed stat. Cast speed no longer places totems more quickly. Base totem placement speed is faster than the cast speed used to be.
  • Base Totem Placement Speed has been increased from a placement time of 800ms to 600ms.
