Energy shield is a form of defence that acts as an additional hit point pool on top of life. Along with armour and evasion, energy shield is one of the three defence types that can implicitly appear on equipment. Unlike life, energy shield will recharge naturally after the character has not taken any damage for 2 seconds.

Every class starts with no energy shield, and gains 2% increased maximum energy shield every 10 intelligence.

Mechanics

Damage mitigation

If the character has any energy shield remaining when damage is taken, even damage from Labyrinth traps, that damage is inflicted on energy shield first. Physical damage reductions and elemental resistances applies to damage before it is deducted from energy shield. Damage is only applied to life or mana once all energy shield is depleted. The exception to this is chaos damage, which bypasses energy shield.

Recharge

Recharge is active until it is interrupted by damage to energy shield, or damage to the status energy shield protects—normally life, or mana with Eldritch Battery. It is not interrupted by reaching full energy shield or by loss from non-damage sources.[1]

Start of Energy shield Recharge

Effect of #% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge

Energy shield will start recharging if the character does not take any damage for a certain period of time. By default, this time is 2 seconds. It can be reduced with #% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge modifiers from passive skills and equipment.

Let r be the sum of #% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge modifiers (as a percentage). The delay period in seconds is given by:

For example, having 100% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge results in a delay period of 1 second.

Energy shield Recharge Rate

Energy shield recharge rate modifies recovery from recharge and is by default:

This recharge rate can be increased with #% increased Energy Shield Recharge Rate modifiers.

With Eternal Youth, recharge rate is 33.33% of life instead.

Stun prevention

While the character has any energy shield remaining, the character has a 50% chance to ignore being stunned. This bonus is not additive with other stun avoidance modifiers from passive skills and equipment; the chance to ignore stun granted by energy shield is rolled separately.[2] This avoidance does not require damage to reach energy shield; it will work even when all damage is taken by an Aegis or Ward first, or bypasses energy shield due to Divine Flesh. It is disabled by Eldritch Battery[3] even when damage can still be taken by energy shield through Mind Over Matter.

  • All local Energy Shield modifiers on items, as well as the base Energy Shield of items, have been reduced at higher levels. Very low-level items will see a slight increase or no change, scaling up to a 33% reduction at the highest tier of modifiers.
  • Because of Armour/Energy Shield and Evasion/Energy Shield equipment, we've had to apply this change to the local percentage modifiers on all other armour types as well. To compensate, all inherent values of base Armour and Evasion Rating on equipment are now greater at higher item levels.

  • Local Added Energy Shield modifiers have been rebalanced at all levels. Early mods grant more energy shield, dropping to 36%-45% less energy shield at the highest tier.
