Take fire damage over time for a duration (default: 4s). The DOT is scaled with base fire damage of the hit (default: 90% of the base fire damage per second)

Ignite is a damaging elemental ailment associated with fire that causes the affected target to take burning damage (fire damage over time).

By default, ignite does not stack. Multiple ignite debuffs can exist on a target, each with their own independent duration, but only the ignite with the highest damage per second will deal damage at any given moment.[2][3] For example, if an enemy is inflicted with a 100 DPS ignite, then a 50 DPS ignite 2 seconds later, the outcome will be 400 damage over 4 seconds followed by 100 damage over 2 seconds. , which causes hits to inflict a different 'Ignited' debuff on enemies that already have the regular Ignited. With two Emberwakes, this alternative debuff stacks 2 times, for a total of 3 damaging ignites per enemy.

Damage

Ignite's base burning damage is 90% of the flat damage of the hit per second.[4] Therefore, over the base duration the target will take 360% of the base damage dealt. Ignite inflicted by enemies deals 200% of base damage over 4 seconds, or 50% base damage per second.[confirmation needed because of 3.17.0 change]

Like other damaging ailments, ignite DPS is not directly related to immediate hit damage. Instead, ignite DPS is calculated separately by taking the flat damage of the hit (consisting of base and added damage modified by conversion) and multiplying that flat damage with damage modifiers relevant for ignite. This independent calculation prevents double-dipping by stats that apply to both the hit and ailment, such as the attacker's #% increased Fire Damage or the defender's Fire Resistance.

Due to the separated calculation, various hit-specific modifiers will never directly affect ignite DPS, such as Melee Damage, Attack Damage, Spell Damage, Area Damage, double or triple damage, resistance penetration, lucky damage, or critical strike multiplier. Many support gems will provide separate modifiers for hit and ailment damage however, such as Ruthless SupportRuthless SupportSlam, Support, Melee, Attack, Strike

Note that while the deal Damage #% faster stats multiply base DPS, they also apply a corresponding inverse modifier to base duration.[5] This is typically favorable, as ignite does not stack, and a new ignite can be applied before the lowered duration matters.

Critical Strikes

Critical strikes inherently have Always Ignite. Additionally, damaging ailments from critical strikes gain a bonus +50% damage over time multiplier, which stacks additively with other sources of damage over time multiplier.[7] Critical strikes do not directly affect ailment damage otherwise, though it's possible for mechanics to change this:

  • Elemental Overload causes ailments to never count as being from critical strikes, removing their bonus.
  • Perfect Agony causes ailments to use a hit's critical strike multiplier instead of damage over time multiplier.
    • The combination of Elemental Overload and Perfect Agony prevents the application of damaging ailments by hits entirely.
