Loss is a catch-all term for negative changes to resources, primarily life, mana, and energy shield. It can be considered the opposite of recovery.

Mechanics

Loss is fundamentally not limited to specific mechanics. It is not necessarily caused by damage, and damage does not necessarily cause loss (e.g. Ward, Dissolution of the FleshDissolution of the Flesh

  • Inherent Rage loss

Loss from non-damage sources does not hit, cannot be modified by defensive stats, and does not interrupt recharge.[1]

Loss does not necessarily need to originate from damage to kill the player. Life-removing mana flasks can remove all life (outside a hideout). However, sacrificing cannot.

Loss determines whether a hit is savage.[2]

Over-time loss is tracked partially. It's possible to lose 1 life over a duration.[3]

Interactions with recovery

Recovery and loss are normally distinct modifications.[4] When the same event causes both loss and recovery, they are not totalled and applied together; they modify your resources individually, in an order appropriate for the effects involved. (Except Gluttony of Elements.)[5]

When over-time loss and over-time recovery occur together, loss is always handled second. [6]

  • Resources count as Full if they recovered to full at the start of a server frame, even if some of that resource is immediately lost afterward.[7]
    • A 1000 life player with 1000 over-time recovery and 800 over-time life loss (in one server frame) will effectively start every server frame with 200 life remaining. They will count as full life for relevant stats, and be on low life in practice. If loss per frame exceeds maximum life, the player will die, regardless of recovery.[8]
