Life is shown as a red orb in the lower left of the screen and will decrease as you receive damage. Characters die when they reach 0 life and must be resurrected in town. You can restore life by using flasks, gaining life regeneration from passive skills and equipment, or leeching life from enemies. Life is fully restored when you enter a town.

Every class starts out with 50 Life, and gains +8 per level giving a base life of 842 at level 100. Strength increases Life, with every +10 node giving +5 Life. Characters do not begin with any life regeneration, but it is available from gear and passive skills.

   Maximum Life = (42 + (Level * 8) + (Strength / 2) + additive modifiers) * (100% + multiplicative modifiers) 

Additive modifiers are added directly to your base life (+x to maximum life). Multiplicative modifiers apply to additive modifiers as well as base life and strength (+x% increased maximum life). See Modifiers.

Passives

There are passive skill nodes that grant additional life or a combination of bonuses including life. Other passives such as Life Regeneration and Life Leech are related to life, but do not increase maximum life.

The Chaos Inoculation Keystone will reduce your Life to one, nullifying any low-life spell damage bonuses, as well as any increased life or life regen passives taken. Pain Attunement will increase your spell damage if your Life is at or below 35% (this can be achieved through Blood Magic and reserves). Blood Magic removes your Mana, letting you use your Life to cast spells.

Life

These passives either add a set amount to a character's maximum life or increase maximum life by a percentage.

Recommendations

The following is recommended:

The fight consists of multiple phases. Before the Shaper encounter begins, the player must defeat four side bosses at the nexus. After that a portal opens to the Shaper's arena. The Shaper himself has three phases. At the end of the first and second phases he banishes Zana and the player to a passage while he heals up. The players must traverse the passage and return to the arena to begin the next phase. The Shaper recovers health slowly between phases.

  • If players are anywhere within the purple circle, they will be dealt heavy damage:

Volatile Anomalies/Vortex

  • Slow-moving grey balls that seek the player appear from the edges of the arena
    • Once the ball touches the player, it will create a vortex on the ground, that deals heavy cold damage over time if players stand within it
    • Players must attract the balls to the edges of the arena to prevent them from restricting mobility and combat space
    • Each vortex lasts for 25 seconds
    • Each vortex will be removed once the phase ends
Monster Portal
  • The Shaper teleports to the side of the arena, opens a monster portal and becomes invulnerable
  • The portal will spawn various kinds of shaped monsters, one at a time for about 25 seconds
  • The monsters will exit the portal and attack Zana and the player. Players must simply kill the monsters to prevent her from dying
  • If Zana is successfully protected, the portal is closed
  • If she loses all her health, she retreats and slowly recovers health, while recovering she will be unable to create her protective bubble shield (see below)
    • This is the only time in the fight when Zana is vulnerable to damage
Bullet Hell

  • The Shaper disappears from the arena and becomes invulnerable during this attack
  • The Shaper fills the arena with purple "bullet" projectiles that deal heavy damage
  • The intended way to escape this is to stay within Zana's protective red bubble
  • When this attack is about to end, Shaper will usually fire a beam while there are some projectiles still on the arena
  • Each bullet will deal:
Zana's Bubble
  • Once per phase Zana will create a protective bubble shield
    • Players are encouraged to stand in the bubble to avoid the Shaper's attacks (typically the Bullet Hell attack)
    • Staying anywhere in the bubble's hemisphere will protect the player, even if the character is almost at the edge of it
    • A Vortex can still spawn during this and restrict movement within the bubble

The Nexus

The entry area is X shaped and contains four paths, each leading to a boss that must be killed before a portal in the middle opens. The bosses are four randomly-chosen map bosses. After they are killed, the Shaper fight can begin.

The 4 bosses will be a random selection from the following:

Nightmare Manifest (Transformed Piety from Malformation) no longer spawns as a possible boss.

At the end there is a boss that players must defeat, after which a portal opens up that returns players to the main arena.

opens a harder instance of the boss fight. The Shaper is fought in Area Level 85 and greatly increases in difficulty. The fight with the Shaper will have the following changes:

  • Area has the mod Monsters take 70% less damage
  • The Shaper will summon two shadow clones throughout the fight, which can use Shaper's balls, melee, and beam skills.
  • Volatile Anomalies (and their Vortexes on detonation) are not cleared between phases.
  • The Shaper's ball projectile spell fires two additional projectiles to the side, and penetrates 40% of Cold Resistance instead.
  • The Shaper's slam attack is faster, has a larger area of effect, does more damage, and cannot be blocked.
  • Zana will not shield you against his Bullet Hell attack, but he fires less projectiles per attack. Penetrates 40% of Cold Resistance instead.

There is a rare chance to find and unlock the Celestial Hideout upon killing the Shaper. Each player in the area receives the hideout, irrespective of who deal the final blow.

Lore

The Shaper is the creator of the Atlas of Worlds and was the main antagonist of the Atlas of Worlds expansion. The Shaper's real name is Valdo Caeserius, and is the father of Zana Caeserius. Zana assists the player during the battle with the Shaper and constantly implores him to stop fighting and join her, but he refuses.

The Synthesis league also expanded the backstory of the Shaper and his construction of the map device.

Historical

Path of Exile has gone through multiple expansions since the Shaper was introduced, and as such mechanics that used to pertain to him no longer exist, or were modified.

Background information about the Shaper was written in the Book of Memories, which was filled as the exile collected his Memory Fragments from Elder-influenced zones.

Life Gain on Hit

When an enemy is hit by your attack, you gain an amount of life equal to combined life gain on hit bonuses from passives and all other sources. This applies to each enemy hit by your attacks, so a single attack that hits multiple targets can trigger more than one life gain on hit effect. Unlike life leech, life gained this way is restored instantly.

Blood Magic (often referred to as BM) is a keystone passive skill that converts all mana cost and reservation to use life instead. It also gives you more maximum life and removes your mana.

Mechanics

Skills that reserve mana will reserve life and skills that cost mana will cost life instead. Mods that affect mana cost and mana reservation such as X% increased/reduced Mana Cost of Skills, + X to Total Mana Cost of Skills and X% increased/reduced Mana Reservation Efficiency of Skills have no effect on the life cost and life reservation of skills. It is not possible to commit suicide through Blood Magic.

If taken with Eldritch Battery, your energy shield will continue to protect mana but will not be spent.

While you have Blood Magic, you are neither at full mana nor low mana.[1]

Taking this keystone along with Sanguimancy from Warlock of the Mists will provide the 50% increased Life Reservation Efficiency of Skills stat, but otherwise impart no additional benefit.

Chaos Inoculation (often referred to as CI) is a keystone passive skill that grants immunity to chaos damage, but sets maximum life to 1.

Although the character must survive entirely on energy shield instead of life, immunity to chaos damage can be a significant advantage.

Interactions

The chance and duration of both being stunned and receiving an elemental status ailments is based on your maximum life before CI takes effect[1]. Maximum Life modifiers such as increased maximum Life, reduced maximum Life, etc. apply to the life before CI is applied. Since this base life value is then overwritten by CI, the only advantage life modifiers provide to a CI character is the reduction on stun and status ailment thresholds.

Low life conditions will never take effect while CI is enabled. Effects such as Pain Attunement and On Low Life mods on gear will not activate. For these effects, you must have 50% or less of your current maximum life. Chaos Inoculation sets your maximum life to 1. The exception to this is if you have Coward's LegacyCoward's Legacy

Chaos resistance reduction/penetration

Since CI grants a flat-out immunity to chaos damage, effects that reduce or penetrate chaos resistance (i.e. Occultist's Void Beacon) have no effect against CI.[2]

Being Poisoned

Being Immune to Chaos Damage means that Chaos Damage cannot inflict poison (to the entity immune to chaos damage), although physical damage can still inflict poison.

CI builds

It is generally best to wait until you have high energy shield before taking CI because it's much easier to survive on life at lower levels. Don't be afraid to take life passive skills for survivability while leveling up, since you can remove them later.

Characters with CI are usually more susceptible to stun and status ailments because of their low base life. Rather than taking otherwise useless life nodes as described above, Stun can be mitigated by obtaining Stun Immunity (e.g Vile Bastion), stacking Chance to Avoid Stuns, or through niche items such as SkyforthSkyforth

Chaos Inoculation works well with some other keystone passives, such as:

  • Ghost Reaver converts sources of life leech into energy shield leech, at the cost of disabling ES recharge.
  • Zealot's Oath applies life regeneration to energy shield. The amount recovered is based on the same % of your max ES, rather than your max life. Flat regeneration recovers the same amount. Note that "regeneration" does not include life flasks, as they are just "Recovery".
  • Divine Shield can provide a large amount of regeneration to builds that also stack large amounts of Armour and Physical Damage Reduction.
  • Ghost Dance can instantly recover ES on builds that have a decent amount of Evasion, at the cost of capping your energy shield by your evasion rating.
  • Wicked Ward can be used by builds relying on recharge, sacrificing some recharge rate for uninterruptible recharge.

While the mind endures, so too will the body.

Mind Over Matter (often referred to as MoM) is a keystone passive skill that allows the character's mana to absorb a portion of the damage dealt to life. It is an essential part of the Mana before Life defensive technique.

Mechanics

Main page: Mana before Life

40% of the damage that would be inflicted on the character's life is deducted from mana instead. If the character has insufficient mana, then the remainder of the damage will be taken from life.

Damage is applied to energy shield before life, and as a result there is no opportunity for any damage to be absorbed by mana.[1] Mind Over Matter is therefore rendered useless in conjunction with the Chaos Inoculation keystone.

When the passive skill Eldritch Battery is allocated energy shield protects mana instead of life. This energy shield will absorb the converted non-chaos damage before it is applied on mana. Since chaos damage bypasses energy shield the chaos damage will then be applied directly on mana.

Mind Over Matter does not reduce total incoming damage or increase a player's actual life total, and so does not affect the threshold or effectiveness of stun and ailments applied to players.[2]

Mana/Life ratio

For mana to not run out before life the unreserved mana should be at least 67% of unreserved life, granted that 40% of damage is taken from mana before life.
