Guardians of the Void

The Guardians of the Void (a.k.a. Shaper Guardians) are four bosses of special Tier 16 maps, who each drop a different Key to the Crucible map fragment required to fight the Shaper. They are the guardians of the Shaper.

Mechanics

Upon killing T14+ Map Bosses, a Shaper-influenced Tier 16 map may drop (approximately 3% drop rate), which has one of the four Shaper Guardian specific map bases. The drop rate can be increased with Atlas passive skills. The map can also be sold by Kirac or offered in-map as part of his Atlas Missions, as well as from Map type rewards, Tujen, and Ritual, among other sources. Players can use an Orb of HorizonsOrb of HorizonsStack Size: 20Reforges a map item as another of the same tierRight click this item then left click a map to apply it. to convert the map between the 4 Shaper Guardians map bases. However, players cannot roll regular T16 Map into Shaper Guardians maps, or vice versa.

Shaper-influenced maps contain several Shaper-themed monsters and may drop Shaper-influenced items. It is also possible to find The Maelström Cell within these maps. The boss and arena are affected by map modifiers. Each arena contains various stage hazards and spawns weak monsters at various points during the fight.

Drops

Shaper Guardians may drop one or several Shaper-influenced items upon defeat, as well as a Map fragment corresponding to the Guardian that was killed. Opening a complete set of fragments in the map device can open portals to fight the Shaper.

Lore

Guardians of the Void (also known as Shaper Guardians) were minor antagonists of the Atlas of Worlds expansion and were required to be defeated to fight the Shaper.. According to the lore, each of the Guardians used to be one of the Shaper's captors (likely serving under High Templar Venarius) but were transformed due to their vices and exposure to the Atlas into their current forms.

In the War for the Atlas expansion, it was possible to spread Elder's influence onto the Shaper Guardian maps as part of the story quest. Doing so would replace the bosses with stronger versions of the Elder Guardians, and was required to spread Elder Influence onto the Shaper's Realm and unlock the Uber Elder encounter.

As of the Conquerors of the Atlas expansion, the player exists in an alternative timeline where the Shaper and Elder have already been defeated by the Elderslayers. It is presumed that the Shaper Guardians were also defeated as a result of said battle. Their fights are still accessible through their map encounters but do not have any impact on the current storyline as antagonists. To explain this, a new Zana voiceline was added:

In the Echoes of the Atlas expansion, the Guardians of the Void are referred to in the the Uncharted Realms. They can be duplicated by the Maven and fought simultaneously in Maven's Invitation: The FormedMaven's Invitation: The FormedModifiers to Item Quantity will affect the number of encounter rewards dropped

The Shaper and Elder storyline is gone and has been replaced by a story that takes place in the aftermath of the old story. Zana can now sell Shaper- and Elder-influenced maps once you have progressed your Atlas enough. These act like the old Atlas influence, creating new monsters, threats, and rewards. The Elder, Shaper, and combined Elder and Shaper encounters can still be accessed. If you're lucky, Zana may offer a Elder or Shaper guardian's map!
2.4.1	The Guardians of the Void can no longer be permanently taunted. They can only be taunted every so often.
