Whenever a player or monster is hit, there is a chance they will be stunned. A stun interrupts whatever that creature was doing while a brief animation is played.
Mechanics
Hits have a chance to stun based on their damage compared to the target's maximum life. The base duration of the stun animation is 350ms.
- Stun is determined before damage is prevented by block. When a blocked hit stuns, a block animation is performed instead.
- Damage over time, reflected damage, and self-damage cannot stun.[1][2]
- Hits that inflict Freeze can stun;[3][4] "on stunning" and "when stunned" effects will occur immediately. Characters will not perform the stun animation until action speed allows, typically after unfreezing.
- Critical strikes that result in cold damage being taken cannot stun under normal conditions. For details and potential workarounds, see Stun § Interaction with cold damage crits.
- Certain monster skills are not able to stun at all, typically skills that hit rapidly in a barrage or an area.
- Picking up an item grants a brief immunity to stun.[5]
Stun chance
Stun chance can be calculated using the following formula:[6]
- If the chance to stun would be less than or equal to 20%, it is ignored,[7] requiring hits to deal more than 10% of effective maximum life to have a chance to stun. Dealing at least 50% of maximum life will always stun.
- Monsters' is their maximum life before the party life bonus.
- For a player with Chaos Inoculation, is whatever their maximum life would be if they did not have Chaos Inoculation.[6]
- It is possible for players to base their stun threshold on energy shield instead of life, for example with ValyriumValyrium

Stun Threshold is based on Energy Shield instead of LifeThey will rise and fall in fire and blood.. This applies even when energy shield is 0 or incapable of taking damage due to Eldritch Battery.
Stunning damage
In calculating stunning damage, melee damage has a +25% bonus to stun chance and non-physical damage has a -25% penalty to stun chance. Both of these can cancel each other out. Therefore, Damage can be calculated as the following:
Note: Version 3.21 made it harder to stun with 'almost all skills', excluding melee attacks.[8] It is unknown how this modified the stun calculation, and this factor is not reflected in the above formula. (In effect, it appears to make non-melee damage ~30% less effective for stunning.)[9]
Stun threshold
Reduced stun threshold modifiers reduce the value of . For example, 25% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold means the enemy will be treated as if their is only 75% as much as it actually is, increasing the chance that the enemy will be stunned.[6]
When the total Stun Threshold Reduction would be over 75%, it is instead treated as being:
The net effect on the mean number of stuns during a monster's lifetime is as follows:
- Hyperbolic regime: From 0 to 75% Reduced Stun Threshold, the mean number of stuns per lifetime increases from 2 to 8, accelerating as it goes.
- Linear regime: Every 3.125% Reduced Stun Threshold past 75% increases the mean number of stuns per lifetime by 1.
If a player has a total of 110% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold from gear and skills, the actual value according to equation 4 that gets used would be:

Stun duration
The default length of stuns is 350ms.[6] A significantly long stun duration (700+ ms) will also display a swirling circle above the character or monster.[10]

The duration of stuns can be altered by increased Block and Stun Recovery, increased Stun Duration on enemies, and similar modifiers.
Stuns versus unique bosses
Kitava (and his map boss variants) is the only boss with explicit stun immunity, although some bosses are immune to becoming stunned or interrupted during specific attacks.
Avoiding stun
There are passive skills and item modifiers that grant a chance to prevent stuns:
- #% chance to Avoid being Stunned
- #% chance to Ignore Stuns while Casting
- Having any amount of energy shield when hit grants a baseline 50% chance to ignore a stun.[11] This occurs as long as the defender had energy shield before being hit, regardless of whether energy shield was fully depleted by the hit, and even if damage never reached energy shield due to e.g. Ward or Divine Flesh. Eldritch Battery removes this chance[12], even if damage can still be taken by energy shield through % of Damage is taken from Mana before Life.

A character with considerable amount of energy shield is continuously casting a spell. The character has following mods:
- 38% chance to Avoid being Stunned
- 25% chance to Ignore Stuns while Casting
When the character then gets hit that normally would cause a stun. However, due to all the avoidance modifiers the actual chance to become stunned is:
Interaction with cold damage crits
Apart from all other considerations for receiving or inflicting a stun, stun cannot occur if:
- The hit is a critical strike;
- Cold damage is taken by the defender (directly or with taken as modifiers); and
- The attacker's critical strikes can inherently Freeze.
Note that freeze does not prevent stuns. This behaviour appears to be due to certain mechanics related to freeze:
- Non-crits that freeze can stun normally, whether it is against the player[4] or against enemies.[3][16]
- Crits with no cold damage can stun normally, even when the damage is capable of freezing, such as with HexblastHexblastSpell, AoE, Chaos, Hex
