Quality

Quality improves the signature stat of an item such as the physical damage on weapons and base defence rating on armours or adds additional bonuses to gems.

Mechanics

Any item that drops with randomly generated quality can drop with up to 30% quality. This chance is weighted, with the majority of items having 0% quality, and quality above 20% being progressively more rare. Certain monster reward modifiers can also cause all non-gem items that can have quality to have 1%-30% quality. Any normal rarity or unidentified item with at least 1% quality will have a temporary Superior affix.

Quality can be applied via currency to most equipment (quivers being the exception), as well as gems, maps, and strongboxes. Each item type has a currency item associated with it that increases its quality. Quality does not affect the requirements for using an item or the mana cost of skills.

This makes obtaining many sockets and links 20% more likely on 20% quality items and even likelier on 30% quality items.

Increasing quality via currency is generally capped at 20%. However, there are certain methods that can increase quality beyond that, including:

• Corrupting a gem may increase (or decrease) its quality by 1–10%, with a hard maximum of 23%.
• Corrupting a flask may increase (or decrease) its quality by 1–10%, with a maximum of 40% (by corrupting a 30% quality flask).

Amount

The amount of quality given by a quality-increasing currency item depends on the equipment's item level. The higher the item level, the less quality each currency item will give.

For most items, the amount of quality added by currency items follows this formula:

Quality currencies always add 1% quality to unique items, regardless of its item level.

Effect on items

Quality on equipment is multiplicative to its local stats. For example, 20% quality on a weapon is equivalent to it having 20% more Physical Damage. In another example, a piece of gear that naturally gives 100 Armour that has the mods +50 to Armour and 90% increased Armour and 20% quality would give ${\textstyle \color [rgb]{0.6392156862745098,0.5529411764705883,0.42745098039215684}(100+50)*((100+90)/100)*((100+20)/100)=342}$ Armour.

Certain Harvest crafting crafts can apply enchantments on weapons and body armours that could change the effect of quality on that item instead of the default quality (weapon physical damage or body armour defences). This does not affect other aspects of quality such as the chance to have a certain number of sockets or links.

Skill gems

Both skill gems and support gems may have quality. Every skill is affected by quality differently, but it frequently improves the damage dealt with the skill or provides small improvements like increased Area of Effect. Even those that do have their damage improved will see different improvement rates for a given amount of quality.

The effect of quality scales with the base quality effect, however, only whole numbers will be granted (and thus the effect will always be rounded down); for example 3% quality on a gem with 0.5% effect will only grant 1% effect and not 1.5% effect. Effects with some degree of fractions are rounded to their natural bases (i.e. seconds will be rounded to milliseconds, etc.).

3.23.0	A substantial amount of damage-dealing skills have had their quality stats buffed. In most cases they will be significantly more powerful than before, and also more interesting. Many supports have also received changes to their quality stats. The vendor recipe for turning a Level 20 Gem into a 20% Quality Level 1 version of that Gem no longer works with Skill Gems, as the benefit Quality provides to damage dealing Skills is now more powerful. The vendor recipe can now only be used with non-Awakened Support Gems. Anomalous, Divergent and Phantasmal Quality Gems have been removed from the game. Existing alternate Quality Gems now have the base Quality effect found on the respective Gem.
2.2.0	When you use an Orb of Fusing or a Jeweller's Orb on an item, the item's quality is no longer consumed. The way that quality affects the result has also been changed. Each 1% quality improves the result by 1%. This makes the Fusing process 20% easier on 20% quality items, for example.
