Damage conversion
Damage conversion is a mechanic that changes the damage type of a hit into another damage type. Damage conversions do not apply to damage over time.
Mechanics
Damage conversion changes the damage types of a hit. It can occur in two forms:
- #% of [Damage Type] Converted to [Damage Type]
- Gain #% of [Damage Type] as Extra [Damage Type]
The difference between these forms is the effect they have on the source damage: Converted to removes the damage from the source type, while Gain as Extra leaves it intact.[1][2]
Conversion applies early in a hit's damage calculation: after added damage is added to base damage, but before multiplication by modifiers such as #% increased/more Damage.[3]
Enemy mitigation has no interaction with the attacker's conversion. If physical-to-cold converted damage is dealt to an enemy, that enemy mitigates it as cold damage.
Conversion order
Damage conversion always obeys the following conversion order:[4]
- Physical → Lightning → Cold → Fire → Chaos
Steps can be skipped, but damage can never be converted backwards (e.g. Physical to Cold is possible, but Cold to Physical is not possible).[5][6]
The conversion calculation loops through the source damage types in order, and within each source damage type, Gain as Extra is calculated before Converted to. Some consequences of this include:
- Damage can be chain converted through multiple damage types, since the damage types are looped in forward order.
- Gain as Extra is calculated on the source damage before it gets converted away by Converted to, and is thus not affected by it.
- Since the calculation is by source order, mods such as gain #% of Non-Chaos Damage as Extra Chaos Damage can apply multiple times to the same damage as it is converted through different damage types.
Overconversion
If Converted to modifiers sum up to over 100% conversion from a source damage type, the modifiers will be scaled down so that the total is 100%.[7] In this scaling, conversion modifiers from skills take precedence, and will not be scaled down if possible; afterwards, non-skill sources of conversion will be scaled down to the remaining percentage. Conversion from the skill itself, from support gems, or from skill-specific stats (e.g. #% of Manabond and Stormbind Lightning Damage Converted to Cold Damage) are all considered skill conversion. Common sources of non-skill conversion are gear or passives.[8][9]
Damage modifiers
Damage modifiers such as #% increased/more Damage are applied to converted damage for any of the damage types that the damage was converted through, but only once.[10][11] For this to happen, each quantity of converted damage still remembers the history of the damage types it was converted through. For example, a damage quantity that was converted from Lightning to Cold would benefit equally from 10% increased Lightning Damage, 10% increased Cold Damage, 10% increased Elemental Damage, or 10% increased Damage.

With Galvanic Arrow's 100% base damage effectiveness and no added damage, the hit begins with 100 base physical damage.
- Skill conversion has precedence over non-skill conversion, converting 50 physical to lightning.
- The fire and cold conversions are scaled proportionally to convert the remaining 50 physical damage:
- 50 * (50/150) = 17 Physical damage converted to Fire by Blackgleam
- 50 * (100/150) = 33 Physical damage converted to Cold by Hrimsorrow
- gain 10% of Physical Damage as Extra Chaos Damage does not interact with the other conversions. The hit gains 10 chaos damage, based on the original 100 physical.
According to the conversion order, the game moves on from Physical and proceeds to convert Lightning damage:
- 50 * (40/100) = 20 Lightning damage converted to Cold by Call of the Brotherhood, 30 remains.
Damage modifiers apply. Relevant modifiers are included in the calculation for each type:
- 30 lightning damage includes modifiers to physical, elemental, and lightning, resulting in 120 lightning damage.
- 17 fire damage includes modifiers to physical and elemental, resulting in 51 fire damage.
- 33 cold damage includes modifiers to physical and elemental, resulting in 99 cold damage.
- 20 cold damage includes modifiers to physical, lightning, and elemental, resulting in 80 cold damage.
- 10 chaos damage only includes modifiers to physical, resulting in 20 chaos damage.
Imagine a player wielding a sword that deals 100 base Physical Damage, and performs an attack with the following modifiers:
- Adds 30 Cold Damage from a support gem
- 50% of Physical Damage converted to Cold Damage from a skill gem
- 30% of Physical Damage converted to Fire Damage from gear
- 30% of Physical Damage converted to Lightning Damage from gear
- 30% of Physical Damage Gained as Extra Fire Damage from a support gem
- 15% of Physical Damage Gained as Extra Cold Damage from a support gem
- 50% of Cold Damage converted to Fire Damage from a support gem
- 80% increased Physical Damage with Swords from gear
- 30% increased Melee Physical Damage from Strength and passive skills
- 20% increased Fire Damage from passive skills
- 15% increased Cold Damage from passive skills
- 30% more Physical Damage from a support gem
- 70% more Weapon Elemental Damage from a support gem

Physical damage and conversion scaling
Total physical damage conversion exceeds 100%, so the values are scaled down based on priority.
- Skill-based conversion is first, so 50% is converted to Cold. Remaining conversion steps will be scaled down to the remaining 50% (100% - 50% = 50%)
- Remaining conversion is next, with total 60% scaled down to 50%.
- The scaled 50% is split again proportionally, leading to 25% converted to Fire and 25% converted to Lightning.
As 100% of Physical Damage is converted, the final damage will deal 0 Physical Damage.
Cold damage
Based on 100 Physical Damage, the skill has 50 Cold Damage from Phys to Cold conversion and 15 Cold Damage from Phys gained as Cold; in total, 65 Cold Damage from Physical. 50% of this is converted to Fire, and the remaining 32.5 Cold Damage is affected by Cold and Physical Damage modifiers:
- 80% + 30% + 15% = 125% increased damage
- 30% more (physical) damage
- 70% more (elemental) damage
- 32.5 * (1 + 0.8 + 0.3 + 0.15) * 1.3 * 1.7 = 161.6 Cold Damage from Physical
There is also 30 "flat" Cold Damage not from conversion. 50% of this is converted to Fire, and the remaining 15 Cold Damage is affected by only Cold Damage modifiers:
Lightning damage
Based on 100 Physical Damage, the skill has 25 Lightning Damage from Phys to Lightning conversion and is affected by Lightning and Physical Damage modifiers:
- 80 + 30 = 110% increased damage
- 30% more (physical) damage
- 70% more (elemental) damage
- 25 * (1 + 0.8 + 0.3) * 1.3 * 1.7 = 116.0 Lightning Damage
Fire damage
Based on 100 Physical Damage, the skill has 25 Fire Damage from Phys to Fire conversion and 30 Fire Damage from Phys gained as Fire; in total, 55 Fire Damage from Physical. This damage is affected by all Fire and Physical Damage modifiers:
- 80 + 30 + 20 = 130% increased damage
- 30% more (physical) damage
- 70% more (elemental) damage
- 55 * (1 + 0.8 + 0.3 + 0.2) * 1.3 * 1.7 = 279.6 Fire Damage
There is also 32.5 Fire Damage that was converted from Cold that was converted from Physical. This damage is affected by all Fire, Cold, and Physical Damage modifiers:
- 80 + 30 + 20 + 15 = 145% increased damage
- 30% more (physical) damage
- 70% more (elemental) damage
- 32.5 * (1 + 0.8 + 0.3 + 0.2 + 0.15) * 1.3 * 1.7 = 176.0 Fire Damage
There is also 15 Fire Damage that was converted from flat Cold Damage. This damage is affected by all Fire and Cold Damage modifiers:
- 20 + 15 = 35% increased damage
- 70% more (elemental) damage
- 15 * (1 + 0.2 + 0.15) * 1.7 = 34.4 Fire Damage
