Essence
An essence is a category of currency items used for crafting equipment. Essences can be used to upgrade a piece of normal rarity equipment to rare or reroll a rare item's modifiers with one guaranteed modifier.
Essences are primarily obtained from essence monoliths containing monsters trapped in crystals which can be released by clicking on them three times. (These monoliths are sometimes also referred to as "essences.") This encounter is considered Extra Content and has a baseline chance to appear in any campaign act and map area, and can appear more than once in an area. The specific chance for essences to spawn has never been officially published.

An essence's type determines which guaranteed modifiers it can imbue to equipment, while its tier determines the magnitude of bonuses granted by those modifiers.
Natural essences
Groups A–E include all types of essences that can appear naturally on monsters trapped within essence crystals. These essences come in seven tiers, each distinguished by a prefix word. An essence's tier can also be recognized by the number of lines in its 2D art icon. Note that not all types of essences exist for every tier. Lower tiers include fewer types of essences.
Additionally, monsters trapped in corrupted essence crystals may appear naturally in areas with monster level 32 and above. Mechanics
Obtaining essences
Monsters trapped in essence monoliths can occasionally be encountered in most areas starting from Act 1 in The Ledge. Clicking the essence monolith three times will break the crystals, freeing the trapped monsters. Essence items can be obtained by killing the trapped rare monster, which is also enhanced by essence monster modifiers. Each essence trapping a monster also grants toughness, reducing the amount of damage it takes.
Some types of essences only exist at higher tiers. This forms a progression in which more types of essences become available in areas with higher monster level. Essence Monoliths in White Maps can spawn up to a maximum tier of Screaming, while those in Yellow or Red Maps can spawn up to a maximum tier of Shrieking.
Tier 7, "Deafening" essences can be obtained by upgrading lower tier essences through the vendor recipe system or by corrupting tier 6 (Shrieking) essences using a Remnant of CorruptionRemnant of CorruptionStack Size: 9Corrupts the Essences trapping a monster, modifying them unpredictably

Right click this item then left click a monster trapped by Essences to corrupt them. Corrupted Essences cannot be modified again. on an essence monolith before releasing the imprisoned monster.
This will result in one of the following outcomes chosen at random:
- Imprisoned monsters are released with no changes to essences.
- All essence tiers are increased by 1 (e.g. 'Screaming' upgraded to 'Shrieking').
- Adds an additional essence type.
- Transform each essence to a random essence type of the same tier in the next group of the same tier (e.g. "of Fear" (Group B) transformed to "of Wrath" (Group C)). Additional caveats:
- Note that this outcome can also increase the tier of the essence if the original essence is a lower tier than the minimum tier for the next group. (e.g. Muttering Essence of Fear will upgrade into a Weeping Tier C Essence).

Essences are encountered in the wild as a monster 'possessed' by an Essence, mechanically similar to possession by a tormented spirit. Essence can only appear on a rare or unique monster and the monster can hold more than one essence. When the monster is killed, the essences will drop as an item.
