Not to be confused with Damage conversion or Damage taken.

Damage taken as, also known as damage shift, is a mechanic that allows damage from one damage type to be taken as another damage type. Most of these modifiers specify they only apply to hits; a few rarer sources also apply to damage over time. Damage shift is not conversion.

Mechanics

On the receiving side, damage may be taken as a different type.[1] This is done before any mitigation. It is important to note that this is not damage conversion.[2] The shifted portion of the damage does not retain its original damage type, meaning that it will not get mitigated twice; only the final damage type applies. For example, if some of the incoming damage is shifted from physical damage to fire damage, the fire damage would not be mitigated by armour.

Damage taken as is calculated simultaneously, this means that the incoming damage can be shifted to any other type of damage. For example The Rat CageThe Rat Cage

Since damage taken as does all calculations simultaneously, this also means that the initial damage cannot be shifted between damage types more than once, preventing a loop.[4]

and Avian Twins Talisman with #% of Fire Damage taken as Lightning Damage equipped the incoming physical damage will be shifted to fire damage but the fire damage cannot be further shifted to lightning damage. Because both of these operations would be performed simultaneously on the initial physical damage hit. So we'd be trying to take fire damage as lightning damage before any fire damage exists.

Shifting damage does not count as preventing the original damage type; Physical Damage taken as Fire Damage will be considered incoming fire damage and will not contribute to Divine Shield or similar effects.

This mechanic is useful against elemental penetration, especially against many boss attacks like Atziri's Flameblast (10% Fire penetration) or The Shaper's projectiles and bullet hell (25% Cold penetration), because for example if you have 50% Cold damage taken as Fire, then with a 1000 Cold hit and 75/75/75 res you would only take 500 * (1 - 0.75) + 500 * (1 - 0.75 + 0.25) = 375 damage instead of 1000 * (1 - 0.75 + 0.25) = 500 damage. If you manage to take 100% of the penetrated element as another element then you can completely nullify the effect of penetration (in the above example, a 1000 Cold hit would be taken as a 1000 Fire hit and mitigated with 75% Fire resist, resulting in 250 final damage taken).

A word of caution: players should avoid having over 100% of a specific damage type taken as other damage types. As all of these stats apply simultaneously, exceeding 100% will cause the player to take more base damage than was originally taken.[5][6]

Interaction with reflect

Because "damage taken as" occurs before modifications to damage taken, stats such as #% reduced Reflected Physical Damage taken only apply to reflected damage taken as physical. A build that fully reduces reflected physical damage will still take reflected damage if physical damage is taken as elemental damage or chaos damage. (This does not apply to Cannot take Reflected Physical/Elemental Damage, which functions both before and after damage shifts, preventing this interaction.)

Ailments and damage over time

Taking damage as cold or lightning damage will allow the portion of damage taken as those elements to chill you, or shock/freeze/sap/brittle you if you have a chance to have those ailments applied to you (e.g. via critical strike or hexes).

Damaging ailments, on the other hand, are based on the damage dealt, not damage taken[7]; for example, when you have #% of Physical Damage from Hits taken as Fire Damage and physical damage is dealt to you, the taken fire damage never ignites you even if you have +100% chance to be Ignited. Theoretically, the physical damage could ignite you, but ignite does not consider physical base damage by default.[8] However, it is possible for the Physical Damage to Ignite you with modifiers such as Mokou's EmbraceMokou's Embrace

The Fire damage over time is still considered Bleeding damage.

    • The bugged values were T2 (8-12)% - T1 (13-15)% - Elevated (11-13)%.[9]

  • Many Modifiers that granted Physical Damage taken as an Element or Chaos can no longer roll. This includes Incursion Temple and Delve modifiers on Helmets, Corruption modifiers on Shields, Fire Warbands modifiers on Helmets, and all Watcher's Eye modifiers.
  • The Lethal Pride Unique Jewels that added Physical Damage taken as Fire Damage to Notables now instead give 1 Rage on Melee Hit.

Notes

  1. It is not stated explicitly in the patch notes, but the physical damage taken as chaos damage explicit mods have been moved to mod group "PhysicalDamageTakenAsElement". However, it does not affect the corruption implicit mod or the Synthesis implicit, which they can still appear along with one other damage taken as implicit mods, as the implicit are in mod group "PhysicalDamageTakenAsChaos" and "PhysicalDamageTakenAsElement". This change also not affecting the incursion hybrid mods (the damage taken as + resistance variant) until a change circa version 3.19.0, which they now have "PhysicalDamageTakenAsElement" mod group as well as their existing "Cold/Fire/LightningResistance" mod group
  2. Despite stated that the change affect existing versions of the item. However, the change does not affect the initial version of the mods, which only requires character level 1 to equip.
