Essence Possession Effect

"Essences were encountered in the wild as a monster 'possessed' by an Essence, mechanically similar to possession by a Talisman or Tormented Spirit. Essence can possess a rare monster and monster can have more than one essences possessed . When the monster is killed, the essences will drop as an item."

Was about to add another category for this explanation but ... need more info for each essence give what effect on monster, if you have enough information about this please add in another table under this.--Vironlawck (talk) 12:10, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

I will merge this category into List of Essence category when we have a "complete" info for this, seems that list of essence kinda empty after i re-edit them --Vironlawck (talk) 02:18, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

"Tier" vs "Level"

As per mark_ggg, essences are (intenerally) at least ordered by levels https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/50380o/ziggyds_essence_league_cheat_sheet/d70xtv7

The community has been calling them tiers though, and ziggy's spreadsheet reflects that too. Not sure with what to go here unless GGG states they have a preference for either --OmegaK2 (t|c) 22:38, 29 August 2016 (UTC)

A recap, as I understand it: The essence affixes represent the magnitude of the mods that they imbue; these form a progression (GGG calls these "levels" internally). Which affixes you can find is determined by the area level (GGG calls these "tiers" internally). —Vini (t|c) 01:13, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
I've been thinking about this a lot, and the more I think about it, the more GGG's internal terminology (as described by Mark) makes sense. However, ZiggyD and possibly many others in the community have already settled on the "backwards" terminology. I don't think we should enforce GGG's internal terminology if that will introduce confusion in the way people already understand how the essence mechanics work. —Vini (t|c) 03:57, 30 August 2016 (UTC)
I've asked mark_ggg about it, see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/50380o/ziggyds_essence_league_cheat_sheet/d71w8vk?context=3
He noted that the game refers to them as levels, and if we use tiers that would probably cause more confusion. So it isn't just internal terminology after all. I've seen some people start to use the level term, and I think we have a certain level of power here on the wiki - I've seen people adapt terminology over time, so it might be enough to change the terminology to the proper wording over time, especially since the league hasn't started yet.
As a result I'm more inclined to go with essence level, feels more correct overall. --OmegaK2 (t|c) 06:41, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Sorting by type instead?

It seems to me that we should order the list of essences by what type of essence first, then by level/tier. It would make scanning through them much more efficient. Thoughts? Fambida (talk) 23:31, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Done, sorting by tier can easily be changed back to with the table anyway. --Illviljan (talk) 23:42, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

Errors

Not sure where these numbers came from, but the dread essences for one are definitely incorrect at higher tiers. it becomes +2 to bow gems at the shrieking tier, not sure about deafening. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Disgustipated1 (talkcontribs) 14:54, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

You're welcome to correct any of these errors, if you want. —Vini (t|c) 18:59, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

Vendor Recipe???=

In the front material there is a link to "vendor recipes", where the essence upgrade recipe is *not* listed. The actual recipe is present here on this page but hidden in the middle. --Weregamer1 (talk) 00:21, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Misinformation about corruption only essences?

The article here and the respective essence articles say that the four corruption-only have a strict upgrade relation, meaning that Scorn turns into Insanity, Envy into Horror, Misery into Delirium and Dread into Hysteria. Up to now this relation was correct for the last few essences I've successfully corrupted, but I've had an essence of Envy turn into Hysteria now, which breaks that pattern. Looking into the history of the articles it seems to me like people simply wanted to express that the four purple essences are the ones you need to corrupt and the strict one-to-one pattern was mistakenly read into it and the misinformation spread further.

Does anyone else have input about this? --aRTyficial (talk) 22:27, 2 September 2017 (UTC)

Remnant of Corruption with Tormented Spirit

It might be possible that an Essence produces an Remnant of Corruption if the essence monster is additionally possessed by a Tormented Spirit. It happened to me today, but I cannot garantuee that the Essence tome didn't already hold the Remnant of Corruption prior possession. Molldust (talk) 13:14, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

AND apply a debuff of the same name apparently , or Arctic Breath is not related to the essence and is the monster skill itself? Neokowloon (talk) 09:11, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

Also for Essences of Wrath and Essences of Anger. Neokowloon (talk) 09:52, 26 March 2020 (UTC)

I don't get it. Why File:Essences.png is removed? Neokowloon (talk) 01:19, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

"Tier" vs "Level" part 2

This is a continuation of a discussion from 2016 in which it was discussed what terminology to use for the hierarchy of essences, according to their prefix word (Whispering, Muttering, etc.). We previously agreed to go with "levels", since it was clarified by Mark that they were referred to as levels internally, and there was no in-game terminology for it at the time. However, this is no longer the case with the introduction of the Atlas passive skills introduced in version 3.13.0. The Amplified Atlas passive skill grants the effect "Essences found in Areas are a tier higher" to all maps in Haewark Hamlet. I have confirmed through testing that "tier" is referring to essences according to their prefix words. Taking this node allows Shrieking essences to appear naturally in Haewark Hamlet maps, whereas Screaming is normally the highest tier that can appear in maps. Therefore, I propose changing all references to an essence's "level" to "tier". Since we were already using the word "tier" to refer to essences by group, we need a new word for that. Perhaps it's just as simple as changing "tier" to "group". —Vini (t|c) 00:58, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

I think havest craft also has change essence tier recipe. Neokowloon (talk) 01:48, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

What are those "Essence Prefixes" and "Essence Suffixes"?

What are those "Essence Prefixes" and "Essence Suffixes"? I mean "Frosted"... "Entombing", "Essences", ... "of Ruin", "of Unmaking", "of the Essence", etc. as seen on https://poedb.tw/us/Bows#ModifiersCalc (section "Essence Prefix"/Essence Suffix)

Can the "Essences" and "of the Essence" affixes appear only when I essence-craft an item? Or can those mods be seen on items dropped by monsters?

(And, am I right to suppose that when I essence-craft an item, then not only the "Essences" and "of the Essence" affixes can appear, but many others ("Razor-sharp" etc.))

an "Essence Prefix" or "Essence Suffix" is a prefix or suffix that can only be generated through using an essence. (or by killing an essence mob with certain atlas tree points). for the last sentence, using a given essence will reroll all of that item's modifiers, while guaranting a specific essence modifier stated on the essence. there will be exactly one essence mod and the rest will be non-essence.Bloonpauper (talk) 02:11, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
