A shrine

Shrines are special objects that apply an effect to nearby monsters or cast spells at nearby players. Interacting them allows the player to temporarily steal their power for themselves. This mechanic is also referred to as Domination.

Shrines are considered a form of Extra Content.

Mechanics

Shrines can appear randomly in most areas. Shrines are often surrounded by a pack of monsters guarding it. Initially, shrines will only buff enemies and damage players. When touched, the shrine's effect is removed and given to the player for 45 seconds (20 seconds for Divine Shrines) in the form of a status effect. Shrine effects will either buff the player (but not their allies) or cast spells that damage enemies. A player can be affected by multiple different shrine effects.

Shrine effect duration and buff effect can be modified with certain items and passives.

Certain effects from shrines, namely effect that deal with on death effects, are symmetrical. For example, enemies near an Apparition Shrine have a chance to drop influenced items on death, as do monsters killed by the player while they have the Apparition Shrine buff effect on them.

Right-clicking on the status icon will remove the shrine effect.

Lesser shrines

Lesser shrines do not spawn naturally and are generated by the Create Lesser Shrine skill from The GullThe Gull

. Unlike regular shrines, they have no ongoing effects before being touched and disappear after 10 seconds, which can be modified with duration modifiers. Touching a lesser shrine grants a buff to the player for 20 seconds. Lesser Shrine buffs are also affected by Shrine buff effect and duration modifiers.

Shrine types

There are two kinds of shrines: Buff and Spell; Buff shrines grants buffs to affected monsters, players, the player's nearby party members. Spell shrines cast spells around themselves or affected players, but do not originate from the player and thus are unaffected by their mods.

Gloom Shrine

You gain a portion of Non-Chaos Damage as extra Chaos Damage and Enemies you Kill have a chance to Explode, dealing a portion of their Maximum Life as Chaos Damage.

Divine Shrine

Cycling shrine buffs

Staves with the Gain a random shrine buff every 10 seconds from the Runesmithing staff enchantment select a random shrine buff from the above list every 10 seconds. Swapping or unequipping the weapon removes the shrine buff. The base duration of each buff is 10 seconds. Increasing the duration through applicable modifiers allows several shrine buffs acquired this way to be active simultaneously. Note that some of the shrine buffs might not apply in all areas, such as low-level campaign areas.

In maps, small-sample testing[1] suggests the following rough tentative distribution of weights for the different buffs:
