Legion
Legions are ancient armies frozen in the midst of battle. They can be encountered by touching a Timeless Monolith, which breaks out the Legions and gives the player a window of time to defeat them. This encounter is considered Extra Content and has a baseline 8% chance to appear in any non-unique map area.
Overview
Players can find a Legion by interacting with a Timeless Monolith. Monoliths have a base greater than 8% chance to spawn in a map.
Monoliths can also be found via other sources:
- Using a Legion map device crafting option
- By use of a Legion ScarabLegion ScarabStack Size: 20
Limit: 5Area contains an additional Legion EncounterWhat good is peace to a warrior? Can be used in a personal Map Device to add modifiers to a Map. - As a room in The Temple of Atzoatl (the Hall of Mettle room and its upgraded versions).
- In The Climb (Act 1) - Will always have Eternal and Karui legions
- In The Dried Lake (Act 4) - Will only have Eternal legions
Interacting with the Monolith will reveal a battle between two Legion factions that are in stasis. A timer will start once the Monolith is activated. During this phase, the enemies can be "killed", breaking them out of stasis and allowing them to be fought when the timer ends for rewards. The timer can range from 14 to 20 seconds (or more with Atlas passives), with a longer timer in lower-level zones. Once the timer runs out, all the enemies that were broken out of stasis will remain and start attacking. Enemies that didn't get broken out will disappear.
Schism: Alternatively, taking the Timeless Conflict keystone will disable the Legion timer. Instead, breaking out monsters and chests from stasis will contribute progress towards a Schism, as shown by a progress bar. Once the progress bar is full, the Schism will occur and the Legion encounter will begin. Breaking out monsters and chests with rewards or more powerful monsters will contribute more progress towards the Schism.[1]
Some Legion enemies have a symbol above their heads, indicating an additional reward type they will drop. Chests and War Hoards can also spawn, which can be destroyed and opened after the timer runs out. Destroying a Chest or War Hoard will free all nearby enemies without symbols in a radius around it. The general of each Legion can occasionally spawn, always spawning in the far rear of the formation. If a general spawns, the monolith will display a wave of purple on the bottom in the direction of the general.
Generally, rarer, more rewarding spawns will spawn further away from the monolith. Therefore, it's advised to move deep into a formation as quickly as possible if you are looking for rare spawns.
Items
There are two types of currency associated with monoliths; each are specific to the legion.
Splinters
Legion enemies and chests can drop Splinters of their Legion. 100 Splinters of the same type can be combined into an Emblem.

Emblems
Emblems are obtained from combining Splinters. They can be put into a map device in order to open a portal to the Domain of Timeless Conflict. You must use at least two Emblems of different Legions to open a portal to the Domain. A fifth slot for the Map Device can be unlocked by completing a tier 17 map or Maven's Invitation: The Atlas, allowing all 5 Emblems to be used (commonly called a 5 way). Unrelenting Emblems occasionally drop as a reward from the Domain of Timeless Conflict when all five factions are present.
