Players take 1% less Damage from Hits per Fortification.

Fortification is a stackable buff. Players inherently have 1% less damage taken from hits per stack of Fortification. By default, it has a maximum of 20 stacks and lasts 6 seconds. The amount of stacks gained per hit depends on a combination of the hit's damage (ignores the target's damage reduction), the enemy's ailment threshold, and the enemy's rarity.

When you hit an enemy with a fortifying hit, you will gain a variable number of stacks, based on how much damage the hit would have dealt to the enemy before taking into account the enemy's damage reduction, depending on the enemy's ailment threshold. There is a bonus to Fortification generation against magic, rare, and unique monsters such that you may generate more stacks from hitting a map boss than from hitting a normal monster in the same map, despite the boss's higher ailment threshold. Insufficient damage can cause a hit to grant zero stacks.

You can only gain Fortification stacks from one hit every 0.1 seconds, and each instance of stacks gained lasts for the default Fortification duration without refreshing any other instance. For example, if you gain 5 stacks from one hit, 6 stacks from another hit a second later, and then 7 stacks from a third hit, when the first instance of 5 stacks expires you will be left with 13 stacks from the remaining instances.

Instances are tracked even when you are at maximum Fortification, so if you gain 18 stacks from one hit, then 18 from another hit, bringing you to the Fortification limit of 20, gaining another 18 stacks from a third hit will not change your displayed Fortification, but when the first instance expires you will still have a total of 36 stacks, and therefore still be at maximum Fortification. Up to 100 instances of Fortification can be tracked this way.[1]

Fortification stacks do not buff the player with less damage taken; a character inherently takes less damage for having Fortification, similar to how stats are gained for having Rage or Charges.[2] This means increasing Buff Effect (with IchimonjiIchimonji

The Fortification mastery that grants Recover 100 Life for each Fortification Lost does not recover life when you lose instances of Fortification while you are still at the maximum; you only gain life when your displayed amount of Fortification decreases.

#% less Damage taken modifiers are calculated after armour, resistances, and endurance charges.[3] For more detail, refer to Receiving Damage.

Sources of Fortification

Fortification can be gained by multiples sources which split into two categories, those that go through regular rules of Fortification (Hit) and those that works as buff with a limited amount of Fortification. The sources are the following:

Maximum Fortification stacks

If it was possible, increasing the maximum Fortification by 80 stacks would provide 100% less damage taken from hits. Up to 60 additional stacks can be attained by combining all of the following:

  • +10 stacks from the veiled mod +10 to maximum Fortification while Focused, but only while you have Focus (Crafting Bench versions are +6/+7)
  • +10 stacks for a brief time after placing Dread BannerDread BannerAoE, Spell, Duration, Aura, Physical

  • Melee hits that can Fortify now generate roughly twice as many Fortification stacks as previously, based on damage dealt. Fortification generation against magic and rare monsters has been further increased.
  • The base duration of Fortification has been increased to 6 seconds (previously 5).
