Layout

This map contains the initial spawn room and four sequentially connected floors. Each floor must be fully cleared to spawn the stairs to the next area.

The second, third, and fourth floors are inspired by the tilesets of the Crypt, the Temple of Atzoatl/Vaal Outpost, and Abyssal Depths/Abyssal City respectively.

Mechanics

Coward's Trial does not benefit from map quality and will not grant additional item quantity. The map can still benefit from the Map DeviceMap DeviceHideout ItemCreates an object in your hideout2 Variations's item quantity mod.

The area level increases by 1 each time the player enters the next area starting from the second floor, up to +3 in the last room. The map is one of the few unique maps that can potentially reach an area level of 84 (or higher) which is important for finding item level 86 base types, the others being Oba's Cursed TroveOba's Cursed Trove

Each floor contains several waves of monsters, with additional waves of specific types of monsters depending on the modifiers on the map itself. The number of magic and rare monsters increase with every wave, and at the end of every wave a rare Necromancer spawns[1].[confirmation needed because of 3.7.0 changes]. The final wave is the exception to this, where Infector of Dreams is accompanied by monster types that can only appear during the final wave.

Several flavour/hint messages appear in the chat window during the map:

  • When a new wave begins: The darkness looms forebodingly...
  • When the current room has been fully cleared: The room grows still and quiet...
  • When the last room has been fully cleared: The oppressive atmosphere slowly dissipates...

Except the mods Contains waves of Monsters and Contains additional waves of Undead Monsters, the rest of the mods are "optional" which can be rerolled with a Divine OrbDivine OrbStack Size: 20Randomises the values of the random modifiers on an itemRight click this item then left click a magic, rare or unique item to apply it. to switch them "on" or "off" (1 or 0), or dropped naturally as "on" or "off". Thus, the map can have zero additional waves except the base waves of Monsters and waves of Undead Monsters, or have all 7 optional waves (Ghosts, Oriathan Zombies, Phantasms, Raging Spirits, Bone Rhoas, Ravager Maws and Zombies respectively). There are 2^7 = 128 combinations of map mods. The chance to have zero optional waves or all 7 optional waves, were 1/128 respectively, assuming equal chance to roll the mod value as 0 and roll as 1.

It is purely a cosmetic, as the value (30-50) which was used to be for Area has (30-50) seconds between monster waves and the value (22-25) was used to be for Area has (22-25) waves of monsters, which both mod texts (and stat id behind) were converted to match new version due to 3.7.0 change, but the numeric value were retained. These values are still displayed in the official trade site search result as a relic. Such values will be "deleted" by using Divine OrbDivine OrbStack Size: 20Randomises the values of the random modifiers on an itemRight click this item then left click a magic, rare or unique item to apply it. and does not affect the function of the map, but the orb will most likely add more waves to a legacy map.

Player can sell the legacy item to a NPC in exchange for a new "The Coward's Trial" map from the current map series, but retain the aforementioned legacy mods.

In general, narrow, linear maps will contain fewer total monsters than maps with complex layouts.
