Minions are allied monsters summoned by the character. Minions have their own stats, and their actions are treated entirely separately from the summoner.

Mechanics

Minions are entities separate from the player: they are allies, but not party members. Unlike proxies, minions have their own skills. They do not possess the player's stats unless those stats specifically affect minions or allies.

Minions may be granted stats by, for example:

  • Stats specific for minions or allies
  • Support gems linked to the skill that summoned them
  • Buffs, including Auras
  • Charges
    • Minions gain the same stats from charges as players, not monsters.
  • Shields equipped by the player through Necromantic Aegis.

Flask effects do not normally apply to minions, except life flasks with Grants % of Life Recovery to Minions. (This recovery applies regardless of the player's life, even with Chaos Inoculation.) Other flask effects may apply by using uniques like Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Mother's Embrace" or Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Umbilicus Immortalis".

Minions cannot be granted skills by items.[1]

Minions' minions are not your minions. They are not affected by the player's global minion stats, or by generic stats on support gems. Only minion-specific stats on support gems are passed down to them.[2]

Support gems

Support gems linked to minion-summoning skills do not support the individual skills of that minion. Instead, if a support gem is valid for the summoning skill, the stats on that support gem are copied directly into the base stats of all minions summoned by that skill.[3] Supportability does not matter afterward.

For example, Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Withering Touch Support" is normally limited to supporting attack skills. When it supports a valid minion-summoning skill, such as Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Raise Spectre", or any attack also supported by Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Summon Phantasm Support", all minions from that skill will gain % chance to inflict Withered on Hit and % of Physical Damage as Extra Chaos Damage as base stats. Because the stats themselves are not limited to attacks, they will apply to spells cast by Spectres or Phantasms.[4]

Note: some stats may have hidden limitations. For example, Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Spell Echo Support"'s 10% less Damage applies globally to all minion damage as described above[5], but its Repeat an additional time stat is specific for casting.

Duration

Minion Duration is affected by both modifiers to skill effect duration and minion duration.

  • Example - [Tested 3.23] Summon Skeletons has a base duration of 20.00 seconds as per the gem description. If one takes the Enduring Bond wheel (northeast of the witch's starting position), it adds 3 sources of minion duration (+12%, +12%, +20%) and one source of skill effect duration (+20%). This totals to +44% minion duration and +20% skill effect duration. The final duration calculation is: 20.00s * (1 + (0.44 + 0.20)) = 20.00s * 1.64 = 32.80s duration.
  • Final/current minion duration can be verified by hovering over that minion skill when it's assigned a slot in the skill bar, as this displays the skill's stats post-calculation/modification.

Minion kills

Kills by minions are their own, not their summoner's. However, the summoner is credited for the following purposes:

  • Experience
  • Flask charges
  • Loot
  • Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Headhunter" and Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Inspired Learning"

Minion behaviour

Most minions will follow the player and may be recalled with Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Convocation". Minions that follow the player may be directed by using a skill (that can target a location or direction), such as Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Vulnerability" or Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Unearth", causing those minions to move toward your cursor. This is disabled for minions that stay near the player like Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Summon Holy Relic" or minions supported by Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Meat Shield Support".

Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Summon Skeletons" and Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Summon Raging Spirit", on the other hand, disregard the summoner's actions and move on their own accord. Raging Spirits prioritize targets that are not already being targeted by other Raging Spirits.

Aggressive and Defensive

Aggressive and Defensive are properties that can alter a minion's aggro radius.[7]

Aggressive sets minion aggro range to 8 meters, unless it's already higher. This is primarily useful for Golems, which have a low aggro radius by design. Most other monsters are unchanged by the aggressive property, as they already have an aggro radius of 8 meters or greater.[8][9] It also gives Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Summon Skeletons"' Warriors a dashing ability.[10]

Defensive sets minion aggro range to 3 meters, unless it's already lower. It also makes monsters stay near you, instead of moving toward locations you target with skills.

If a minion is both Aggressive and Defensive, the effects will cancel each other out. This can be beneficial in situations where the stats provided by Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Meat Shield Support" and Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Feeding Frenzy Support" are desired, but a change to the minion's normal aggro range isn't.

  • Minions no longer have hidden penalties to Bleeding, Ignite, and Poison damage. Summon Reaper no longer has a hidden bonus to Bleeding damage that counteracted this penalty. As a result, minions now deal approximately twice as much Poison damage, three and a half times as much Ignite damage, and seven times as much Bleeding damage.
  • Minions now gain the same bonuses from Endurance, Frenzy and Power Charges as characters do, rather than the significantly elevated bonuses that other monsters gain.
