Aul, the Crystal King is a ancient historical figure in Wraeclast. He can be encountered as a boss inside the Primeval Throne arena, within The Crystal King's Throne nodes of the Primeval Ruins biome of the Azurite Mine, at a depth of 130 or greater. His arena is called the Primeval Throne. He was the last king of the Proto-Vaal civilization.

Lore

Before its demise, Aul was the last king of the Proto-Vaal civilization. For more information about the history of the Proto-Vaal civlization, visit its page.

As described in Putembo's Meadow, Aul was a slave in his early life, under the reign of an unnamed king. (Theorized to have been called Putembo). he, along with his other slaves, was tasked with quarrying stone to build a "fortress", later depicted in a stone mural to have been a pyramid akin to the Temple of Atzoatl. When the king passed by, it was said that Aul was the only slave who had dared to look him "in the eye".

Aul eventually came to become the last king of the Proto-Vaal. However, it is not known through which means. According to Aul's Uprising, his crown was not won through "fearlessness", "ferocity", nor "tactical genius" (although it is implied that he had all four), but through his leadership. The name of the amulet suggests that Aul led a slave revolt against the then-king, and overthrew him. Focusing on the term "leadership" suggests that Aul might have led the Proto-Vaal through a turbulent period, such as those depicted on the murals and rings.

Several murals found in Proto-Vaal ruins provide clues about Aul's life.

Additionally, The Mad King, Desecrated Virtue, and Crown of the Tyrant are all drops from this boss. Although not conclusive, these drops certainly do not have positive connotations and cast doubt on the benevolence of Aul's reign.

Mechanics

Attacks

Name Description Strategy
Default Attack Aul does a default, close-ranged melee slash attack. 75% of Physical Damage Converted to Cold Damage, 30% more Attack Speed. Should be easily dodgable if you stay mobile.
Spectral Shield Charge Aul shields himself in the center of the arena and makes himself untargetable and invulnerable. He fires several spectral Shield Charges in a sequence towards the player, leaving trails that deal cold damage over time. If the projectiles shatter the Crystalline Cocoons at the edges of the area, they will trigger a damaging attack. Dodge these for a duration, and the attack will end. Base duration is 10 seconds. Cooldown Time: 40 Seconds. Projectiles Pierce all Targets. Use blink skills to dash inbetween the Crystalline Cocoons. Try not to stay in front of one for too long.
Crystalline Arc Aul attacks with a melee attack with an AoE. He creates 15 ice crystals in the arc of his swing. At the end of his swing, the projectiles fly out in an arc. 83% less Damage, 75% of Physical Damage Converted to Cold Damage, 25% less Attack Speed. May be difficult to dodge if you are too far away from him. Stay relatively close.
Crystal Nova Aul puts his sword into the ground and channels ice crystals to appear sporadically around him. He will unleash a large frost nova in an area around him, as well as additional ice spears coming out of the crystals. Deals 275% more Damage, 75% of Physical Damage Converted to Cold Damage, 25% less Attack Speed, Causes 20 Bursts. If you get hit by the nova, you will probably die. However, using a Dynamite while he is mid-animation will stun & interrupt him, stopping the attack.
Crystalline Fissure Aul thrusts his sword forwards, creating a number of snake-like Sunder attacks that move spastically throughout the arena. At the end of their duration, or if they hit a player, they will explode, dealing cold damage. 75% of Physical Damage Converted to Cold Damage. Generally, staying behind him is favourable for dodging this attack. The projectiles don't move very quickly, so they are avoidable.
Whirling Blades Aul does a standard Whirling Blades attack. 75% of Physical Damage Converted to Cold Damage, 60% less Attack Speed. Effectively a slow, large projectile. Should be easily sidestepped.
Crystalline Barrage / Bullet Hell If too many Crystalline Cocoons are broken, Aul go to the center of the arena and do this attack. Any broken Crystalline Cocoons will fire ice projectiles toward the centre. Aul will fire a continuous barrage of cold projectiles at the player. Several projectiles will spiral around him. You should never allow this attack to be triggered, nor let too many of the Crystalline Cocoons in this phase to be broken. Blink abilities are useful.

Ads Phase

The arena will go dark, and ads will emerge from the darkness. The darkness is more dangerous than the monsters, so be sure to bring and use flares.

Strategy

Most of Aul's attacks are, well, attacks with a capital A. High Evasion and Attack Block can greatly reduce the effectiveness of Aul's attacks. Additionally, they mostly deal cold and physical damage, with none at all of any other element or chaos damage (assuming that there are no mods). Defences like a Sapphire Flask, Purity of Ice, or Determination may be hugely useful in mitigating Aul's attacks. As with all boss encounters, high movement speed (a Quicksilver Flask may help) and movement skills like Flame Dash are incredibly important.

Dialogue

Aul has several lines of dialogue for different stages of his fight. He speaks in an unknown language, presumably belonging to the Proto-Vaal civilization to which he belonged. Each line has a number of variants were it is delivered differently. Through analysis of player footage of Aul's fight, we can see that the skills lines each correlate to a skill described above.
