Kurgal, the Blackblooded is a boss that can only appear inside The Lich's Tomb nodes within the Abyssal City biome, inside The Azurite Mine in Delve, at a depth of 90 or greater. It is a member of the race of creatures known as The Lightless.
Arena
The Azurite Mine node that contains the encounter is called The Lich's Tomb. The area immediately preceding the arena as named by the exit portal is called the "Abyssal Span". The boss room is known as Abyssal Sanctum.
The arena is circular and comprised of two rings separated by four small walls in each diagonal direction with gaps in between. The inner and outer walls of the arena also contain several crystal totems (8 on inner walls, 12 on outer walls) that can bounce Kurgal's in the first phase, provide a light source during the darkness phase, and can fire a laser during the second phase.
Mechanics
The encounter with Kurgal, the Blackblooded has two distinct phases, with a darkness phase halfway through the first phase.
Kurgal, the Blackblooded primarily deals physical damage, with some skills having between 15-20% Chaos damage conversion. Kurgal's large beams in its second phase have 80% Lightning and 20% Chaos conversion.
- Initial phase (Green)
- Default attack - Fires a projectile.
- Grenade Mortar - Summons a green crystal that explodes into 8 additional crystals after a short delay upon proximity with the player, which also explode after a short delay.
- Reflecting Beam - Fires a laser toward one of the arena's crystal totems, bouncing between the inner and outer rings in a zig-zag. Deals physical hit damage and damage over time.
- Ground Laser - Casts a ground-targeted beam that slowly follows the player as they move around the arena for up to 7 seconds.
- Summon Obelisk - Creates a large stone pillar in any of the cardinal directions surrounded by three glowing circles.
- Detonate Obelisk - Fires a large beam toward a stone pillar after a short animation. The pillars will glow green before detonating simultaneously, dealing large AOEs of damage around the pillar and glowing circles. The player can avoid the explosions in the centre or corners of the arena outside of the circles.
- Chest Pulse - Casts a single laser pulse dealing physical damage, facing the direction of the player at the time of casting with a distance equal to the radius of the arena.
- Darkness phase
- When the boss reaches 50% of its initial health, it will become invulnerable and untargetable and will spawn Abyssal monsters. These deal a small amount of damage and grant flask charges. In the second half of the initial phase, the fight resumes as before.
- Empowered phase (Purple)
When Kurgal's life reaches zero, he will revive with full life after a short animation, now with a purple glow.
- Default attack - Fires two rapid volleys of three projectiles.
- Totem Ground Laser - Several crystal totems can fire a short-range ground-targeted beam that sweeps across part of the arena in random directions. Note that active totem lasers are not immediately disabled upon Kurgal's death and can potentially still hit or kill the player after completing the encounter until their animations finish.
- Arm Laser - Kurgal spreads his arms 180 degrees apart and launches two laser beams that sweep forward, up until a gap of approximately 20 degrees in front, dealing Physical damage converted to Lightning and Chaos. Immediately follows up with Arm Front Pulse.
- Arm Front Pulse - Casts a single large laser pulse in front dealing heavy Physical damage converted to Lightning and Chaos.
