Catalysts are currency items that add quality to jewellery. Quality on jewellery instead improves the effect of the implicit and explicit modifiers of the specified type, depending on the modifier tags. Modifier tags can be viewed by enabling Advanced Mod Descriptions in the UI options, and then holding the Alt key (default, it matches the item highlight keybind) while mousing over the item.

A catalyst will increase the quality based on the item level of the item, giving a larger bonus to lower item levels, up to a maximum of 20%. Using a different type of catalyst on an item that already has quality will replace the quality type, starting again from 0%.

3.25.0	Item Quality has been reworked. The rarity of the item is no longer relevant when applying Cartographer's Chisels, Blacksmith's Whetstones, Armourer's Scraps, Glassblower's Baubles, and Catalysts to non-Unique items. Instead, the amount of Quality they provide is now based on the item level. These currencies now apply 20% Quality to very low-level equipment, with this amount reducing as the item level increases.
