The Lightless

The Lightless, also known as "the Abyssals", are an ancient race of beings "thought to be long dead"^[1], that emerged from a realm underneath the surface of Wraeclast through cracks in the ground known as the Abyss. The Lightless were the main antagonists of the Abyss league and expanded upon in Delve league and other expansions.

Lore

The Lightless are fearful of light and once populated the gloomy wastes of Wraeclast before the presence of Solaris (the sun).^[1]

Abyssal Liches

The Lightless are led by several powerful Abyssal Liches that reside deep underground. The known Liches are:

Amanamu, Liege of the Lightless - Encountered as a boss in the Abyssal Depths.
Ulaman, Sovereign of the Well - Encountered as a boss in the Abyssal Depths.
Kurgal, the Blackblooded - Encountered as a boss in the Lich's Tomb in the Azurite Mine.

Additionally, Tecrod, the Hated Slave is a named member of the Lightless referenced in the item Tecrod's GazeTecrod's Gaze

Note for completing league challenges : Only Amanamu and Ulaman are considered as Abyssal Liches for the purpose of league challenges as they are the two bosses released during the Abyss league and directly link to the Abyss mechanic, even though the lore also states that Kurgal is an Abyssal Lich. In addition, Kurgal does not drops Stygian ViseStygian ViseHas 1 Abyssal Socket.

History

The origins of the Lightless are unknown, but predate the Vaal. Their culture is deep-rooted in necromancy and they have been known to create underground cities built with bones.

Disorder means death. Order may mean life.Can be used in a personal Map Device. to have broken through to the surface of Wraeclast through the Vastiri Plains, attacking the Maraketh people. The survivors, along with the Clayshaper Ahkeli, repelled subsequent Lightless invasions and founded the Order of the Djinn. Sometime following the death of the Clayshaper, the Winter of the World was ended by the Three Sisters, marking the end of the initial Abyssal invasion. However, the Abyssals continued to amass underground, and have recently begun to re-emerge in Wraeclast.
