Fractured Fossils can be used on maps as long as they do not have any enchantments (acquired from sources such as Delirium Orbs or through Harvest crafting). They can also be used to duplicate blueprints, although the copy must be revealed again. Unlike "beast splitting" the fossil does not work on Logbooks.
Five Fractured Fossils can be used to duplicate basetypes by selling five Split copies created by the fossil to a vendor to receive a non-mirrored, unidentified item[3]. Note that 5 to 1 recipe will yield a non-influenced, non-split copy, while the Item sells for much more to vendors will override vendor recipe. There is currently no known case where this is useful, as you can craft and mirror an item with the Split tag.

Fractured Fossils now apply a Split modifier to both items, preventing further duplication. As a result, Fractured Fossils can no longer be applied to items that cannot be Split, such as Synthesised, Enchanted, Fractured or Influenced items.
