Portrait of Kalandra
Kalandra

Kalandra is a historical figure rarely mentioned in-game. Kalandra is an ancient being, possessing the body of an owl and the head of a human. When we meet her in the Lake of Kalandra, we see her as so. She is an NPC and the subject of the eponymous August 2022 version 3.19.0 expansion, Lake of Kalandra and the accompanying Kalandra league.

Named after her, the Mirror of KalandraMirror of KalandraStack Size: 10Creates a mirrored copy of an itemRight click this item then left click an equipable non-unique item to apply it. Like her currency, she is deeply tied to the mechanics of mirrored items.

Lore

Ancient Etchings

The Ancient Etchings found in the Lake of Kalandra, later discovered to be written by Kalandra herself, detail her story within the lake.

Kalandra first found the Lake during the primordial era of Wraeclast during which there existed "nothing but the lake". She was drawn to enter the Lake through curiosity. Once Kalandra entered the Lake, she found herself trapped and unable to leave. Whenever she flew out of it, she found herself back in the Lake again with no memory of her time outside of it.

During her time trapped within the Lake, Kalandra was able to observe the outside world, unable to join or directly interfere. She observed the invention of religion with disdain, writing: "What is a god, but a thief of virtue?".

Over time, humans - from peasants to grand heroes found their way to Kalandra, in their "time of greatest despair and need". They talked to her, but neither were able to help each other.

Ancient Etching V suggests that Sin may have made contact with Kalandra and that she had a hand in the creation of the Beast. She speaks of a conversation she had regarding faith and belief, things that require mortals to ascend to godhood, and refers to a "thief"; Sin is also known as the "Thief of Virtue".

Ancient Etching VI describes the Order of the Djinn discovering Kalandra, promising to free her and devoted their lives to uncovering the mystery of her and her artefacts of power. However, "once they understood the truth of this place", the scribes tried to erase her from history by burning their books and self-immolating out of fear.

Kalandra grew to become more resentful, perseverating on escaping the lake to set an unknown plan in motion.

Kalandra's reflection

There appears to be an "evil" reflection of Kalandra (also referred to as "Evilandra" in-game data) that rarely appears within the Lake. While the normal Kalandra is called "ArbiterWild" in the game files, this new variant is called "ArbiterWildEvil". In her voice lines, she is called "Evilandra". She has glowing red eyes and appears more dishevelled than the original Kalandra.

Evilandra is more aggressive towards the exile, having dialogue like "You must be destroyed!" and "Foolish creature!". Evilandra has the ability to duplicate all map bosses in the current tile, making the encounter substantially more difficult. As a reward, two Reflecting Mists are left when the encounter is completed instead of one.

Dialogue

For many of her unique dialogue lines, she has multiple variations listed, differing in delivery. For the purpose of succinctness, they will not be listed here.

Generic Lake Encounters

Upon entering the Lake for the first time Audio
Another mortal wanders into my prison...
A promising beginning...
On repeated lake encounters
The wind spoke of your approach.
You've returned.
You've seen much since our last encounter.
You step away, then step back, far older.
Once more, into the lake.
One step closer to enlightenment.
Secrets do not reveal themselves easily.
The lake does not like you... Good.
Until next time.
The lake grows still.
Quiet waters belie unseen danger.
What dies may be forged again.
Before flying off
Wisdom and patience walk as one.
Desire is the source of all suffering.
Have you ever contemplated eternity?
One day, you will fly.
Time is my oldest enemy.
Where you are going depends on where you have been.
As a generic ending line:
The struggle never ends.
Victory is its own reward.
Ambition begets arrogance.
We succeed, but remain lonely.
Wisdom is the offspring of Suffering and Time.
At a certain depth: (Listed as A, B, C)
You trace symbols in the sands of time, but do not comprehend their significance.
The path ahead lies untouched, and unclear.
The future is uncertain, refracted into a haze of spectra without clarity.
Upon entering maximum depth:
The path ahead fades into obscurity... as may you.
Darkness descends. I doubt even a soul such as yours can illuminate it.

Specific Lake Encounters

For each encounter, Kalandra has one line for the beginning, and one for the end.

Encounter Intro Outro
Warbands They have struggled for generations, but have forgotten why. Vengeance is a closed loop.
Rogue Exiles They believe they are the heroes of their own journey. Some were exiled for good reason.
Strongbox Treasure begets danger. Greed shall be the undoing of order.
Breach The Lords have unknowing followers among your kind. They unite only in dreams... for now.
Delirium The Trickster believes himself a master of mirrors. Fah! He awaits a proper fool at journey's end.
Abyss The Clayshaper once took refuge here... for a time. Often, it is our own creations that destroy us in the end.
Legion Their ancestors await their souls. They will wait forever. You are feeding it exactly what it desires...
Shrines I was here before gods, before religion. Trapped. Watching. Curious. The devout offer nothing at the altar. They only take, and destroy.
Metamorph Intrinsic Darkness is merely a shadow cast by the light of the soul. The torturer should pray his search for truth never bears fruit...
Harbinger They have journeyed farther than you know. There can never be peace without understanding.
Essence In death, they get to leave their prison. You would never touch another essence if you knew...
Bestiary I used to love hunting... The Beastmaster once found his way here on a hunt. He is... very strange.
Expedition They come from beyond the sight of the Lake. They are a mystery even to me. Their kind and yours have much in common.
Beyond She wanders still, forever fleeing, forever burdened by guilt. You would lose all hope if you truly understood.
Torment Have you ever met a lost soul, consumed by its own sorrow? Their spirits are imprisoned, forever harrowed by their own misdeeds.
Delve Prospero oversees all treasures unearthed from the depths. An incendiary light at the end of the tunnel, leading only to madness.
Heist Monsters Fools seek to make the power of this Lake their own. They will crack the world. Qotra meddles with forces she does not understand, and can never master.
Untainted Paradise A vision of long ago... There was a time when all of Wraeclast was pure and untainted.
Fishing The Master Fisherman once fished at this Lake. He... should not have done that. In time, all questions shall find their answer.
Crafting Room The lake is a forge beyond all others. Greed is the path to power... and ruin.
Shrines Not even occultists truly know the corruption inherent in these lands.

The Shrine tile does not have a second dialogue upon completion.

Evil Kalandra

The titles of these lines are taken from the game data, not judged by player experience. As player data with Evil Kalandra is limited and the Lake is no longer available content, it may be difficult to ascertain the exact purpose of each line.

Upon entering an Evilandra tile:
Gloom overshadows the horizon, Wanderer.
Show me what you are truly made of.
Another human in pursuit of power. You're not special.
You are meddling in forces beyond your understanding!
Upon using an Evilandra skill:
I doubt you have the fortitude to face their reflections.
An imperfect simulacrum shows no mercy.
Dark reflection!
Raw creation!
Forged likeness!
Duplicate!
Upon completing an Evilandra tile:
Fah!
I have forever. Can you say the same?
Eventually, you will fall.
It is only a matter of time.
On player death:
Death is not the worst fate this lake can inflict.
Have no fear. Another will continue in your place...
One step closer...
Foolish creature!
"Endgame"
Who do you think you are?
Who do you think I am?
You have no idea what forces you toy with.
I cannot let you leave here!
End of all hope!
You must be destroyed!
You are a flawed creation!
Neither of us will ever leave this place.
"EndgameQuest"
You seek to shape this world to further your own goals. We are not unalike.
