Energy shield acts as an additional hit point pool on top of life. If you have any energy shield remaining when you take damage, the damage is subtracted from the energy shield first. Damage is only applied to life once all energy shield is depleted. The exception to this is chaos damage, which ignores energy shield.

Energy shield will recharge if you do not take any damage for a certain period of time. By default, the delay period is 6 seconds. This time can be reduced with Increased Energy Shield Cooldown Recovery modifiers from passive skills and equipment. The formula is delay = 600 / (100 + increased recovery%), so having a 100% modifier gives a delay of 3 seconds.

As long as you have greater than 0 energy shield, you have an implicit 50% chance to avoid being stunned.

Passives

There are passive skill nodes that grant additional energy shield or a combination of bonuses including energy shield. Other passives such as Energy Shield Delay decrease the cooldown delay for energy shield to be restored after taking damage.

Eldritch Battery (often referred to as EB) is a keystone passive skill that makes energy shield protect mana instead of life.

    This is a Support Gem. It does not grant a bonus to your character, but to skills in sockets connected to it. Place into an item socket connected to a socket containing the Skill Gem you wish to augment. Right click to remove from a socket.
    , this does not change mana costs into energy shield costs. The player still pays a mana cost, and can modify that cost with mana cost modifiers.
  • Energy shield recharge is not interrupted by energy shield spent to pay costs. Unless interrupted by damage to mana or energy shield, energy shield will continually recharge.[1][2]

Eldritch Battery also removes the inherent 50% chance to ignore stun while you have energy shield[4] even when energy shield can still take damage by protecting mana.

Acrobatics is a keystone passive skill that causes spell suppression modifiers to grant spell dodge chance instead, at half their value. Spell dodge prevents spell hits, and is capped at 75%.

Mechanics

The chance to dodge rolls independently per spell hit; it is not entropy-based like evasion. Spell dodge occurs before block and other damage mitigation.

Acrobatics lies on the far right side of the skill tree across the Ranger's starting area.

Zealot's Oath is a keystone passive skill that applies life regeneration to energy shield instead of life.

Mechanics

Percentage based life regeneration becomes percentage based ES regeneration based on maximum ES.[1] Percentage based life regeneration can be gained from several unique items and passive skills. ES regen gained this way will only be scaled by ES Recovery Rate, not Life Recovery Rate [2] Life Regeneration Rate modifiers also do not apply.

This will not cause life flasks to recover ES as they give life recovery.[3]

If the character also has Vaal Pact, it takes priority and will not regenerate ES.[4]

If the character also has Eldritch Battery, life regeneration will apply to ES.

Zealot's Oath is incompatible with Pious Path. Zealot's Oath makes Life Regeneration apply as Energy Shield Regeneration instead - since it is no longer Life Regeneration, effects that interact specifically with Life Regeneration, including the one on Pious Path, have no effect.[5]
