The Occultist is an Ascendancy class for Witches.
Overview
Occultists are suited for Witches with a focus on chaos damage or curses. Malediction greatly enhances curse specialists, while Profane Bloom and Void Beacon amplify the output of chaos damage. Occultists are well-served by builds that rely on & maximize energy shield. Occultists also may serve as a generic way to generate Power Charges in builds which lack other means of doing so.

Forbidden Power is a notable Ascendancy passive skill for the Occultist. It increases the maximum amount of power charges and generates a power charge after spending 200 mana. It also grants increased area of effect and spell damage per power charge. Can only generate one power charge per spell cast (for example, casting Arcane Cloak for 450 mana will only generate one charge).
Ruthless mode

Energy Shield, Power Charge Duration
Profane Bloom is a notable Ascendancy passive skill for the Occultist. It grants a chance for enemies with a curse to explode when killed by you or your minions, dealing chaos damage in an area. The radius of the explosion is 22 units, and scales with AoE modifiers.[1]
This effect gives minions their own explosion effect; it does not cause player explosions from minion kills. This means explosions from minion kills will be affected by the minion's stats, including from support gems: Brutality SupportBrutality SupportPhysical, Support

Wicked Ward is a keystone passive skill that prevents energy shield recharge from being interrupted by damage if energy shield recharge began recently, but reduces your energy shield recharge rate from 33% to 20%.

Vile Bastion is a notable Ascendancy passive skill for the Occultist. It grants flat energy shield regeneration and percentage energy shield regeneration for each enemy killed by you or your minions recently. It also grants immunity to stun while you have any amount of energy shield. Hits that fully deplete energy shield will not stun the player.[1]
Since this passive grants energy shield regeneration, it is not removed by Vaal Pact, unlike life regeneration that is converted with Zealot's Oath.
Ruthless mode
Vile Bastion in Ruthless mode does not grant energy shield regeneration or stun immunity while you have energy shield. Instead, it causes your life recoup to also apply to energy shield.
