A stunned monster, which has a circle visual effect above its head

Whenever a player or monster is hit, there is a chance they will be stunned. A stun interrupts whatever that creature was doing while a brief animation is played.

Mechanics

Hits have a chance to stun based on their damage compared to the target's maximum life. The base duration of the stun animation is 350ms.

  • Stun is determined before damage is prevented by block. When a blocked hit stuns, a block animation is performed instead.
  • Damage over time, reflected damage, and self-damage cannot stun.[1]
  • A hit that inflicts Freeze cannot also inflict stun.[2][3] Additionally, a critical strike that cold damage is taken from (including through taken as sources) cannot stun, even if the hit does not or cannot inflict a freeze; this may be a result of a bug.[4]

Stun chance

Stun chance can be calculated using the following formula:[5]

  • If the chance to stun would be less than or equal to 20%, it is ignored,[6] requiring hits to deal more than 10% of effective maximum life to have a chance to stun. Dealing at least 50% of maximum life will always stun.
  • Monsters' is their maximum life before the party life bonus.
  • For a player with Chaos Inoculation, is whatever their maximum life would be if they did not have Chaos Inoculation.[5]
  • It is possible for players to base their stun threshold on energy shield instead of life, for example with ValyriumValyrium

Stunning damage

In calculating stunning damage, melee damage has a +25% bonus to stun chance and non-physical damage has a -25% penalty to stun chance. Both of these can cancel each other out. Therefore, Damage can be calculated as the following:

Note: Version 3.21 made it harder to stun with 'almost all skills', excluding melee attacks.[7] It is unknown how this modified the stun calculation, and this factor is not reflected in the above formula. (In effect, it appears to make non-melee damage ~30% less effective for stunning.)[8]

Stun threshold

Reduced stun threshold modifiers reduce the value of . For example, 25% reduced Enemy Stun Threshold means the enemy will be treated as if their is only 75% as much as it actually is, increasing the chance that the enemy will be stunned.[5]

When the total Stun Threshold Reduction would be over 75%, it is instead treated as being:

The net effect on the mean number of stuns during a monster's lifetime is as follows:

  • Hyperbolic regime: From 0 to 75% Reduced Stun Threshold, the mean number of stuns per lifetime increases from 2 to 8, accelerating as it goes.
  • Linear regime: Every 3.125% Reduced Stun Threshold past 75% increases the mean number of stuns per lifetime by 1.

Stun duration

The default length of stuns is 350ms.[5] A significantly long stun duration (700+ ms) will also display a swirling circle above the character or monster.[9]

The duration of stuns can be altered by increased Block and Stun Recovery, increased Stun Duration on enemies, increased Stun Duration with Two Handed Melee Weapons on enemies and similar modifiers.

Stuns versus unique bosses

Kitava (and his map boss variants) is the only boss with explicit stun immunity, although some bosses are immune to becoming stunned or interrupted during specific attacks.

Avoiding stun

There are passive skills and item modifiers that grant a chance to avoid becoming stunned:

  • As long as a creature has greater than 0 energy shield, it has a 50% chance to ignore a stun.[10] This is calculated independently of the creature's chance to be stunned. First the chance to stun is calculated as normal, and if the stun check succeeds and would cause a stun, there is then a 50% chance that the stun can be ignored. An attack that removes energy shield can have its stun avoided, even though energy shield is 0 after damage is applied. This chance to ignore a stun is removed by Eldritch Battery.[11]
  • The modifier +#% chance to Avoid being Stunned.
  • The modifier +#% chance to Avoid interruption from Stuns while Casting.

The above modifiers are not doing the same thing, and apply at different times. They are not additive with each other.[12][13]

  • +38% chance to Avoid being Stunned
  • +25% chance to Avoid interruption from Stuns while Casting

  • Stun Immunity has been removed from many Bosses in Path of Exile. This includes but is not limited to Atziri, Argus, The Vaal Omnitect and Betrayal Targets. Some Bosses now have specific skills that cannot be stunned, or cannot be interrupted. Kitava is still unable to be stunned.
3.21.0
  • Stunning enemies has become too trivial with the amount of hit damage the majority of players regularly deal. To combat this, we've made it harder to stun enemies with hits for almost all skills - however, since Melee relies on stuns more than other archetypes for survivability, the ability for Melee Attacks to stun enemies has remained untouched.
3.11.0
  • Many bosses are now immune to stun while stunned and for a short time after the stun ends.
3.7.0
  • Melee damage is now treated as having dealt +25% damage for the sake of calculating Stuns.
  • Elemental and Chaos damage is treated as having dealt -25% damage for the sake of stuns. This is additive with the Melee damage stun bonus, so a purely Elemental or Chaos or mixed non-physical Melee hit will see no change to previous Stun behaviour.
