Functions: Guide the exile through the Atlas of Worlds
Quests:
Zana, Master Cartographer is a master. Being the final master, her missions and crafting options revolve around end-game maps. She also allows the player to open maps at a personal map device in a hideout.
Zana is an important NPC in the end-game and plays a major role in the exploration of the Atlas of Worlds and the war between the Shaper and the Elder.
Missions
Zana will appear in the Epilogue after Act 10. She gives you a quest to complete a map, as well as a Zana-modded map to start off with. After completing your first map, she will introduce to you the Atlas of Worlds.
Zana can only be encountered in the wild in maps.
When encountering Zana, she will give you a selection of randomly rolled maps to choose from, each with different missions. Each map will be magic, rare or unique, may have quality, and may be unidentified and/or corrupted. If the map is unidentified, the modifiers will be revealed once the map is entered, and you will not get the quantity bonus for running an unidentified map. Once chosen, she will open six portals to a map where the mission takes place. Leaving a normal Zana mission map, whether via portal or resurrecting at checkpoint after dying, only exits the "inner" map. You may reenter a Zana map even after completing or failing the mission so long as portals remain.
If a mission that requires finding an item (map, unique item, divination card, vaal fragment, etc.) is failed, the item will no longer drop.[1]
Objectives
Possible mission objectives include the following:
- Complete the map (i.e. by killing the boss(es), or opening the final chest on certain unique maps).
- Find the lodestones (10 needed). A few extra are provided.
- Kill all of the corrupted monsters. Multiple packs of Shaper or Elder enemies are added to the map. A counter is shown after the first one is killed.
- Complete the Labyrinth Trial. Completion will count towards your Eternal Labyrinth unlock requirements.
- Find the Map. The map drops from an enemy and is not marked on the map. The mission is completed when a map drops. There is a higher chance this map drop is magic or rare.
- Find the Unique item. Unique item drops from an enemy and is not marked on the map. The mission is completed when the a unique item drops. You may keep the item.
- Find the Divination Card. A Divination Card drops from an enemy and is not marked on the map. The mission is completed when a Divination Card drops. You may keep the item.
- Find the Vaal Fragment. A random Vaal Fragment drops from an enemy and is not marked on the map. Mission is completed when the fragment drops. You may keep the item.
- Kill all of the Rogue Exiles. The map will contain two to four additional Rogue Exiles. If the map contains mods that adds additional Rogue Exiles, they must also be killed. Rogue Exiles that spawned from a Strongbox will add to the counter, but will not increase the required number of Rogue Exiles killed.
- Slay the Invasion boss. The map will contain an Invasion boss.
- Slay the Beyond boss. The map will contain a pack of Voidspawn of Abaxoth mobs. They are marked on the minimap.
- Slay the Warband. The map will contain a Warbands mob.
- Open the Breaches. The map will contain two Breaches. The objective is fulfilled by beginning the Breach; you don't need to engage the resulting monsters.
- Complete the Abyss. The map will contain an Abyss. The mission completes when the Abyssal Trove or Abyssal Depths entrance spawns; you don't need to enter the Depths. The mission is failed if the Abyss becomes sealed.
- Slay the Harbinger. The map will contain two Harbingers.
- Open the unique Strongbox. The map will contain a random unique Strongbox. You must kill the guarding monsters before the objective is complete.
- Slay the monsters trapped in Essences. Two groups of monster with Essences will spawn. You must kill both the Rare monster holding the Essence and the Magic monsters guarding it.
Missions in magic or rare maps will include one condition:
- A single portal spawns for each party member. Leaving the map or dying fails the mission.
- Time limit (40 seconds), killing monsters extends the time limit by 1s each.
- Time limit (100 seconds), touching a Standing Stone extends the time limit by 25s each. Standing stones are marked on the minimap.
- Time limit (300 seconds), with no extensions.
Missions in unique maps will always require only that you complete the map, and will never have a condition.
Maps
The selection of maps offered by Zana for her missions will be the either the same tier or one higher than the map you encounter her in [citation needed]. There is a small chance for her to offer unique maps (ignoring base map tier).
The following unique maps can only be encountered through Zana missions:
- Untainted Paradise
- Altered Distant Memory
- Augmented Distant Memory
- Twisted Distant Memory
- Rewritten Distant Memory
- Cortex
Vendor
Zana's stock resets when you enter a map with Zana's Atlas objective. There seems to be a ~24 hour cooldown between each stock reset.
Zana will sell higher level maps as you progress through the Epilogue quests.

Signature Mod
Zana can provide maps with the Zana's signature prefix mod, This Map's Modifiers to Quantity of Items found also apply to Rarity, applies not only to quantity from affixes on the map item and quantity from quality, but also to quantity gained from modifiers to the map itself such as prophecies that spawn tempests, Zana's Map Device quantity bonus, and some sextant mods.
Crafting
Zana will provide a personal map device, which works similarly to the one in the Templar Laboratory. However, it offers the ability to add an extra effect to the map at time of activation (that is, it does not craft a mod onto the item, but is rather used at the time the map is run).[2] These map modifiers are added as you progress through the Epilogue quests.
Crafting certain effects also gives the player a chance of finding applicable league-specific unique items in the map. For instance, adding the Onslaught mod to a map adds the exclusive uniques from the Onslaught league to the drop pool of that map. While in the map, those uniques can also be chanced from an appropriate base item. The base item itself does not need to originate from the map in question.[3] There is a total of seven challenge leagues available from Zana. The composition, order and price of these challenge leagues changes whenever a new challenge league starts.[4]. This also means that some league-specific items cannot be obtained during a league.
There are also non-league specific effects that change the map base, including a recipe that changes the map to a different base of the same tier or to Shaped or Elder versions of the map.

Dialogues
Zana is currently voiced by New Zealand actress, Katherine Kennard (who also voices Tani, in the Etchings). Formerly, Zana was voiced by Mia Blake.
Experience
Something I've noticed since I've started journeying through these maps, is that the more I know about the interconnected nature of these places, the more I seem to get out of each visit. Knowledge is the key that unlocks understanding, and experience unlocks knowledge.
Oriath
I, like you, found myself on the shores of Wraeclast. I saw the fleets of Oriathan ships dashed on the rocks after Kitava's rise. Who would've thought that Wraeclast was safer than home?
I returned to Oriath not long after hearing of Kitava's demise. There's no one left to tell us we can't live here any more, and the knowledge that once endangered me could actually be put to good use in the cleanup and the rebuilding effort.
I guess I'm not really one to hold a grudge.
Rebuilding
Good quality stone is scarce on this island. It's plentiful on Wraeclast, but shipping it back is slow, and those ships are put to better use bringing back survivors.
I know of a way that we might be able to source vast quantities of not just stone, but any resource you could possibly imagine. I just need to make sure it's safe.
Shaping
My father once told me that there is no greater evil than ignorance. The fact that we're stuck here, thanks to fanatics that deliberately burn and suppress knowledge, tells me he is probably right.
But we are both guilty of this crime. Ignorance of what is happening beyond Wraeclast. Ignorance of the foul hand that shapes the lands that lie through my map device, populating them with twisted monstrosities and maddening visions.
It's a mystery that begs unraveling. I fear that to pull back the veil is to slip into the same madness as its source. But the alternative - that we let the shaping continue, that it grows and swells and spills out into this world - is far scarier.
Exile
My mother died not long after I was born, and my father, too, was gone only a handful of years later. Orphaned, my family's assets were seized and I was handed off to a series of well-off foster homes as an indentured servant.
But children are curious creatures, and even by those standards I was extremely curious indeed. I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on, and questioning everything they tried to teach me. I was too smart for my own good, I suppose, because eventually, I started drawing the attention of the Templar.
Luckily for me, Dominus was much less subtle than the previous High Templars, so I managed to leave Oriath on my own terms, mostly, before my impending exile.
Kitava
Good riddance. In all honesty, I thought the gods were just fairy tales the Templars would tell children to keep them in line. I’d have much preferred that.
No one is happy about what occurred here, but if a silver lining can be found, we all have the opportunity to start again. All our past deeds, good or bad, now lie beneath the rubble.
Maps
These maps are not simple drawings or representations. They're more like... coordinates. Coordinates that could point to any location, or any moment in time, or any memory or dream or idea. And the map device takes you to it. Makes it real.
Creating a map is like channelling a voice who speaks in a language you don't understand, who tells you to go to a place you've never been. It's where art, superstition and science collide at high speed through thaumaturgy.
Corruption
My father's writings frequently references the work of other researchers. In particular, the heretical belief that the environment can influence a creature's form. In Wraeclast, we see the effect that corruption has on beasts, humans, even the dead.
Through my device we see the same thing, but there is no clear source of the vile changes that have turned the pristine landscapes that my father wrote of into the abominations that lay before us. Is Wraeclast's corruption seeping through? Or is something else shaping the development of life out there? And what effect, if any, is it having on us?
Research
My father was a very well educated man. He worked as a researcher in Oriath, back when they were allowed to research more than just holy texts. Sadly, he's gone now.
But his research remained, hidden in our attic. I took what I could and read it in secret as I was moved between foster homes. I read of the mortal founders whose bones were hidden deep in the Ossuary. I read of the false saints who continue to be revered in the Temple of Innocence. I read his writings over and over again. Memorized them. They were the last connection I had to him.
His research became something of an escape, I suppose. I wanted to build on it, especially the maps he described in such great detail. Of course, I'm glad I'm far away from the hollow minds and deaf ears of Theopolis.
Alva
As a fellow explorer, I must admit admiration for Alva. Her motivations may not be as philanthropic as mine, but you can't deny that her methods get results. Do I wonder what kind of repercussions all her time travel is having on us? Of course! But we don't really know what the consequences of our travel through the Atlas are either, and I'm not interested in throwing stones while living in my own little glass house.
I do wish she'd look past profits, but we've all benefited from her finds in one way or another.
Einhar
When I was a young girl I used to play with the neighbourhood stray cat, and one day it started bringing me mice. Einhar is that stray cat. Has he been trying to feed you raw meat too? I just don't have the heart to tell him how inedible it is.
The first time he handed me a big raw steak, I began to cook it over the fire, and he told me I was 'ruining all the good red.' Since then, I've just hidden it when he isn't looking. Sometimes I open up a map and hurl it in there. I know how irresponsible it is, but... Einhar's a sweetheart. I don't need to see under the mask to know how deeply he feels emotions, and I can't bear to hurt him.
Watch your step out there. You may land on some of my rotten scraps.
Niko
I've seen men and women turn mad, but I've never seen a case like Niko... I think the ores and compounds he's been handling have been affecting his mind. He seems to be aware of it, too.
Can it really be called madness when it is of your own doing?
It's a shame. I'm sure we will encounter many subterranean environments where his expertise would be invaluable, but I simply can't risk our safety. The Atlas presents its own potential threats to sanity... putting additional pressure on Niko might send him right over the brink.
Jun
I've tried getting to know Jun, and maybe I'm reading into things a little bit here, but I don't think she likes me. Whenever I try to talk to her, she gets quiet and averts her eyes. I've seen her fight, so I don't think she's exactly shy... and I catch her staring at me every so often. Long stares. The kind you do when you're lost in thought.
I wonder what I did to offend her...
No matter! I'll just stay the course. I'm sure with a little more alone time we'll become fast friends.
Helena
I wish I could say I trust Helena, but I've seen one too many of Dominus's blackguards suddenly snap. The training and indoctrination they go through does not leave much room for one's own judgement.
I'm not trying to sound ungracious. She's done a lot for us, but I'd be telling a fib if I claimed I didn't sleep with a blade beneath my pillow when she's around.
Navali's powers are impressive, yes, but they are not without their limits. It seems her knowledge of things to come is restricted to our realm, however broad that may be. When it comes to the Atlas, her predictions don't seem as reliable.
I wonder how much of this is due to the source of her powers... she claims to have been given the gift of second sight by the Karui goddess Hinekora, but since the gods returned I've heard nothing of Hinekora. Is Navali being misled by a deceptive entity? Or is Hinekora keeping a low profile? Perhaps the goddess simply has no interest in us, as she has her own flock to tend.
Regardless, it may be worth remembering that although Navali is a good friend to have, she has her own agenda like anyone else; an agenda she may have been given by her benefactor.
Cavas
What a strange entity you found, Exile. Completely devoid of memory, yet cognisant, and even driven... I hope to find the time to really get to know him, but I've been so caught up with the happenings out in the Atlas.
Perhaps I'll join you on one of your memory ventures soon.
