A Regal Orb is a currency item that can be used to upgrade a piece of magic equipment to rare. The current modifiers are all retained and one new random affix is added.

Spending

Regal Orbs do two things when used on an item: they add an additional affix, and they convert a magic item into a rare item. Regal Orbs can only be used on magic items.

The adding an affix is useful for improving Maps or Strongboxes, where additional affixes can yield additional results.

Converting a magic item to a rare is important for crafting in that a rare item has space for six affixes (three prefixes and three suffixes) while a magic item only has space for two affixes (one prefix and one suffix).

In crafting, using a Regal Orb is a middle step when crafting a magic item with good affix(s) into a rare. If the affix added by the Regal Orb is desired, one can continue adding up to a total of six affixes through master crafting (using the Can have multiple crafted mods suffix) or the use of Exalted OrbsExalted OrbStack Size: 20Augments a rare item with a new random modifierRight click this item then left click a rare item to apply it. 3.15.0	Catalysts no longer affect the chances of rolling related modifiers on jewellery through crafting, and Quality on jewellery is no longer removed when crafting with specific Currency. Quality from catalyst no longer affect the spawn weight thus the help text of Regal Orb has also changed. (Not explicitly documented in patch notes)
3.9.0	A new type of currency, the Catalyst, is available only by creating and defeating these metamorphs. Catalysts can be used to increase the quality of your rings, belts and amulets in specific ways, enhancing certain types of modifiers. The help text of Regal Orb has been revised to reflect the interaction with catalysts: The item's Catalyst quality increases the chance of applying a modifier which matches the quality type. Removes 5% Quality applied by Catalysts on use. (Not explicitly documented in patch notes)
