Resistances reduce the damage you take from their associated damage type. Enemies can also have resistances, which are indicated beneath their life bar.

Each elemental damage type and chaos have their own resistance value (e.g. "fire resistance") which is viewable in the character sheet by pressing C and clicking on the Defense tab. Physical damage is reduced by damage reduction from armour.

There are various ways your resistances can be increased or decreased:

The "+% to All Resistances" stat grants resistance to the three elemental resistances and excludes Chaos. Chaos resistance is a separate stat, found only on items and the passive skill tree. Complete chaos immunity is granted by the Chaos Inoculation keystone passive skill.

Resistances are initially capped at a maximum of 75%, however there are various ways to change this:

Resistance Penalties

There is a penalty to all resistances (including chaos) applied to your character in each successive difficulty you reach.

  • Normal: No penalty
  • Cruel: -20% to all resistances
  • Merciless: -60% to all resistances

An Apex, Stalker, and Pandemonius Sentinel

Sentinels are a type of item that are exclusive to the Sentinel league. They can be deployed to empower enemies, making them stronger but more rewarding.

Types of Sentinels

There are three types of Sentinels.

Stalker Sentinel

Stalker Sentinel fires beams periodically to empower enemies.

Pandemonium Sentinel

Pandemonium Sentinel fires a beam once, chaining to multiple enemies. Unlike the other types, it will disappear after firing its beam once, even if it didn't get to empower the maximum number of enemies.

Apex Sentinel

Apex Sentinel fires a beam to empower enemies, but it only targets Rare and Unique monsters.

Mechanics

Sentinels can be found in Sentinel Caches that can randomly appear in zones. They can also drop from enemies. The first Sentinel Cache you open with your character will drop a Sentinel Controller, giving you access to the Sentinel Controller and adding Sentinel equipment slots.

When a Sentinel is deployed, it will follow you and fire beams at enemies to empower them, restoring it to full life and giving it an Empowerment buff. Empowerment increases the damage dealt and reduces damage taken by the monster, but it also increase their experience given and item yield. There is also a chance an empowered enemy gains an additional reward. The Sentinel will disappear once it has empowered a set number of enemies, is dismissed manually, or when the user dies.

You can equip one of each type of Sentinel.

Sentinels drop unidentified, but cannot have their mods modified. Sentinels also have a limited number of times they can be deployed. There is no way to add charges to a Sentinel.

Sentinels can be deployed in story zones, regular maps, Vaal side areas, the Eternal Labyrinth, Breachstones, the Temple of Atzoatl, Delve, and Invitations.

Sentinels cannot be deployed in unique maps.

Sentinel Controller

The Sentinel Controller interface, unlocked after using the Sentinel ControllerSentinel ControllerFor aeons, ancient constructs have lain dormant,
but now their designs are under your control.
, allows you to allocate passive bonuses to Sentinels by making connections between Runic Nodes by placing Filaments. Most Runic Nodes require only one Filament; larger Runic Nodes require two Filaments, and Sentinel Slots require three Filaments. The number of Filaments required also represents the number of power units used. Killing enemies empowered by Sentinels grant experience towards unlocking additional power units, starting at 4 up to a maximum of 30 power units at max experience. Filaments can be placed and removed freely without any cost. The Sentinel Controller configuration can be changed anywhere, but the changes will not apply until you enter a new instance and will not affect your Sentinels in the current instance.

Power Core

A Power Core allows you to combine two Sentinels (regardless of charges left) to create a new, fully charged Sentinel. The Sentinel will receive a combination of mods from both components, with a chance for unpredictable changes. Certain Sentinel base types can only be created with Power Cores. Resistance Penetration Mechanics

Some curses lower the resistances of their target. These curses are:

These curses will reduce the target's resistance. If a monster has 75% resistance and is affected by a -40% resistance curse it will have 35% resistance. If a monster has 120% resistance (by way of auras or rare monster affixes), it will be capped at 75%, and upon being hit with a -40% curse, it will be reduced to 80% resistance and still be at the 75% cap.

Some support gems will cause supported skills to ignore a portion of target resistance. These are:

These support gems are applied after the resistance of an enemy is capped to 75%. If an enemy starts with 120% resistance, and is attacked using a 40% penetration supported skill, the enemy resistance is first capped at 75%, then the support gems take effect, lowering enemy resistance to 35%. Penetration gems effectively lower enemy resistance caps. [1]

Both curses and penetration gems can reduce the resistance of a target below 0%.
