Malachai, The Nightmare is the final boss of act 4.

Lore

Malachai was Chitus's thaumaturgist and the creator of Gemlings, humans augmented with powerful virtue gems. He courted Lady Dialla and turned her into the Gemling Queen. After the Purity Rebellion Malachai's life was spared, and he built the Rapture Device to "purge Wraeclast of its otherworldly vices".

Abilities

Malachai has two stages with different mechanics. However, some of the abilities are the same in both stages.

Stage 1

In this stage, Piety channels a lightning beam to disable Malachai's shield. If you stand in this beam you take increased damage.

  • Tentacle attack: Malachai channels for about 2 seconds, dealing moderate damage over time in a large cone in front of him.
  • Smash: Malachai lifts his weapon and smashes in front of him dealing large amounts of damage (about 1.5-2k after mitigation in normal difficulty). This attack is very similar to Vaal's smash.
  • Teleport: Malachai goes into the ground, teleporting to another location. After the teleport, he usually (about 80% of the time) channels for about two seconds and then does a large aoe attack around him for high amounts of damage. This attack is very similar to Dominus' Touch of God.
  • Summon blood worms: The blood worms does quite a bit of damage but have low hp and are easily killed. They give flask charges.

At two points in time, at certain health percentages, Malachai turns Piety into a corrupted form, stopping her channel. This makes Malachai immune to all damage. When this happens, you need to kill Piety. During this time, Malachai still has all his other abilities.

After you kill Piety the second time, Stage 2 begins.

Stage 2

In this stage, Malachai is surrounded by 3 corrupted hearts. At 75%, 50% and 25% hp, Malachai opens up one of these hearts so that they can be damaged. Until the heart is killed, Malachai is immune to all damage. Malachai still has his Tentacle attack and Teleport from Stage 1, but he loses the Smash. Instead of summoning blood worms, he now summons humanoids.

At 25% hp, Malachai also summons a circle of fire that moves towards you at a very slow speed. In this circle you take continuous damage. A similar circle is also summoned around Malachai.

Strategy

In general, don't stand in his abilities and only get in damage when you can.

His smash in stage 1 is quite quick, so if you are melee and are using slow melee attacks like two handed ice crash or any skill with multistrike, you might not have the time to move. The smash can easily oneshot you, so be aware.

The teleport channel is easily recognized and gives you plenty of time to move. This ability can also easily one shot you, so be sure not to stand in it.

The tentacle attack is not too dangerous, but it's easy to run out of so you should do so.
