Equipping this item grants the Kingmaker's Presence buff to nearby allies. It does not affect the user. The effects of the buff depends on the version of the Kingmaker, which the pre-3.6.0 legacy item only grant Culling Strike and increased Item Rarity (IIR).

Note that the "nearby" range is very small; it is measured to be a 3 metre radius. Using the Meat Shield support will keep an Animate Guardian equipped with the Kingmaker from wandering outside of the player character's range while standing still. When the character walks around however, the Animate Guardian will fall in and out of range to apply Kingmaker's Presence.

Item acquisition

Kingmaker has restrictions on where or how it can drop. It cannot be chanced.

The legacy mod Nearby Allies have +1 Fortification is a mod that act as a description of the unique item aura but actually does nothing (the aura is granted by a sperate hidden mod), the item's aura still grant +10 Fortification regardless it is current variant or legacy, unless it is pre-3.6 variants that does not even have the Nearby Allies have +1 Fortification mod.

According to datamined data, the pre-3.6 legacy Kingmaker, actually has a larger aura radius (5 metre verse 3 metre) for granting Culling Strike and IIR to allies,[a] which match the measurement done by redditor.[1] Despite it use the same status icon for current and pre-3.6 legacy variant, the status icon is came from a buff with internal id: "increased_item_rarity_aura", which the fortification (id: kingmaker_fortify_aura), crit multi (id: critical_strike_multiplier_aura) and culling strike (id: culling_strike_aura) are actually coded as separate hidden buffs but without status icons. In other words, it is not a bug that using a pre-3.6 legacy Kingmaker, the aura does not grant crit multi and fortification despite the status icon say so.
