Raise Spectre

True masters of the dark arts learn to use their enemy's greatest strengths against them, binding the souls of the fallen to their bidding. With a dark incantation, the caster's words imbue a slain being with dark energy, animating it with sinister strength and purpose. The raised entity possesses all the abilities it had while living, augmented further by the skill of its new master. With practice, many raised specters can be controlled at once, creating an army of undead to lay waste to everything in its path.
Description on the official Path of Exile website [1]
Raise Spectre is a spell that summons a defeated enemy as an allied minion.
Skill functions and interactions
- Monster types: Unlike minions created with the skill Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Raise Zombie". Please choose only one of the following ids:
ExperimenterBossRaiseZombieInvasion - +(3-10) to Maximum Raised Zombies, Minions have 90% more Maximum Life, Minions deal 30% more Damage (page)
NecromancerRaiseZombie - +(3-6) to Maximum Raised Zombies (page), raised Spectres retain the basic abilities they had in life. Although magic and rare enemy corpses can be used to create Spectres, the Spectres will be the normal version of that monster type, not magic or rare, and totally lacking any unique mods they may have had. However, intrinsic mods for the normal monsters will be maintained except some minion-spawning abilities, so necromancers will curse but not raise more undead.
- Support gems: Raise Spectre can gain the benefits of many different types of support gems, but not all of them may be beneficial depending on the type of Spectres raised. Support gems that increase Attack Speed or modify physical damage won't be useful on caster monsters. Support gems that modify projectiles or spells won't have any benefit for melee Spectres. Minion-specific support gems will work on every type of Spectre to varying degrees of success.
- Corpse targeting: Holding down the corpse targeting toggle (defaults to the "a" button) makes it easier to choose a corpse to raise.
- Monster level: Spectres are downscaled with zone level. So level 70 Spectre in a level 25 zone will be level 25. However a level 25 Spectre will still be level 25 in a level 50 zone.

Strategy
As players progress through the game, there are several monsters that present interesting choices to supplement summoner and hybrid-summon builds alike. Even for a non-summoner build, a single curse-casting spectre whose AI helps them stay away can be quite useful. In practice, it's not that easy to keep a sole spectre alive without having other bodies around to shield it - this means parties and hybrid/full-summon builds. NB: Spectres keep their original monster-level, so players can't take a normal monster into Merciless and expect it to survive even one hit.
Party-friendly
The following list are Spectres that are compatible with parties in general since they are both useful and have a relatively low graphics load for others' sakes:
- Enduring Cry - Hairy Bonecrusher
- Chaos degen aura - Shaggy Monstrosity
- Grants Frenzy Charges - Carnage Chieftain
- Curse-specialists (see below)
Ranged multi-shot and AoE

Finding higher-level Spectres in maps
Aside from chaining maps and hoping in vain, there are several other methods to obtain higher-level corpses from which stronger Spectres can be raised.
- Maps have a default sub-set of mob-types that will spawn, usually related to the tileset.
- Mobs like Stygian Revenants (Undead) and Undying Evangelists (Humanoid) will have better chance to be spawned with a map mod that changes the allowed mob-types.
- Taking existing Spectres into a map adds them to the list of spawnable corpses via Desecrate if allowed by the map, even if there are no mobs of that type present. This seems to be related to the default sub-set above. E.g. taking Flame Sentinels into a white Temple will allow their corpses to be spawned by Desecrate. Note that mods changing the spawn-type such as Bipedal will prevent Flame Sentinel corpses from spawning. Also note that some instances will be more difficult than others to obtain the matching corpses, probably because the the actual monster variety in the map is higher.
- Here is a example list of maps that contain mobs of the following type by default (by no means complete):
- Ancient Construct: (T9) Overgrown Shrine
- Flame Sentinel: (T8) Pier, Temple, (T13) High Gardens, Scriptorium
- Various Goatmen: (T9) Coves
- Experimentors Mortality Experimenter and Flesh Sculptor: (T5) Burial Chambers, (T9) Crypt, Overgrown Shrine, Promenade, Temple
- Oak's Devoted: (T5) Burial Chambers
- Stygian Revenant: ???
- Tentacle Miscreation: (T9) Overgrown Shrine
- Undying Grappler: (T9) Overgrown Shrine, Temple
- Undying Incinerator: (T7) Catacombs, (T9) Crypt
