A Regal Orb is a currency item that can be used to upgrade a piece of magicequipment to rare. The current modifiers are all retained and one new random affix is added.
Regal Orbs are uncommon currency items that can be dropped by slain monsters, chests, and destructible containers. They also drop from Arcanist's Strongboxes.

The primary way to spend Regal Orbs is to consume them to upgrade a magic item into a rare item, adding one random affix. Other than for crafting powerful rare gear, Regal Orbs may also be used to upgrade maps in order to increase item quantity bonuses. They may also be used to upgrade strongboxes, especially Arcanist's Strongboxes, since that strongbox type can potentially drop several uncommon or rare orbs, yielding a net positive return for the player.
Lastly, Regal Orbs can be used to purchase certain skill gems from vendors.
