This page is about the currency item. For the league, see Essence league.

Essences are a complex group of currency items used for crafting equipment. An essence will upgrade a piece of normal rarity equipment to rare and apply one guaranteed affix. Some essences can also be used to reforge the affixes of rare equipment. Essences can only drop in Essence league.

The name of an essence consists of 3 parts: the tier of the essence as a prefix, the word "essence", and the type of the essence as a suffix. For example, Whispering Essence of Woe has the "Whispering" prefix and "of Woe" suffix.

The essence type determines the modifiers that the essence provides, while the essence tier determines the strength of the modifiers.

Essence tiers

There are 7 essence tiers (also called essence levels). An essence tier can be recognized by counting the lines on the 2d art icon of the essence or by the prefix on the name of the essence.

Tier 1 to 5 essences can only upgrade an item (similar to Orb of AlchemyOrb of AlchemyStack Size: 20Upgrades a normal item to a rare itemRight click this item then left click a normal item to apply it.), while Tier 6 and 7 essences can in addition also reforge the modifiers (similar to Chaos OrbChaos OrbStack Size: 20Reforges a rare item with new random modifiersRight click this item then left click a rare item to apply it., but essences overrides master's meta-crafting mods, for example even with blocked prefixes through Haku essence will fully reforge item).

Essence types

The type of the essence can be recognized by the suffix in the name.

There are 25 different types of essences; not all types of essences are available at lower tiers, and the 4 corrupted essences do not have any tiers.

Obtaining essences

An average of one essence can be found throughout the Essence league per zone. The essence item can be obtained by killing monsters trapped by the essence, which are also enhanced by special monster modifiers on the essence.

As seen in the table of essence types above, some essences do not have a low tier version and thus can not be obtained until later in the game.

The following outcomes are known:

  • Mobs are broken free with empowered stats
  • All contained essences have their tier increased by 1
  • Another essence is added
  • Upgrade the essence type to a higher essence type

Essence possession effects

Essences are encountered in the wild as a monster 'possessed' by an Essence, mechanically similar to possession by a talisman or tormented spirit. Essence can only appear on a rare monster and the monster can have more than one essences possessed . When the monster is killed, the essences will drop as an item.
