A nearly completed Atlas of Worlds (pre 3.9 patch).
This page is about the game mechanic. For the expansion, see Atlas of Worlds (expansion).

The Atlas of Worlds is Path of Exile's end-game map system. The Atlas is a series of linked maps that players can progress through after completing a quest for Officer Kirac.

Overview

The Atlas of Worlds is a visualization of the dream worlds that are opened by activating maps, how these worlds are linked and the way they progress towards the centre. The Atlas is separated into four quadrants which can be entered initially through one of four tier 1 maps, one in each corner of the Atlas. These tier 1 maps start dropping in Act 8. When the player progresses through the maps, their tiers - and difficulty - will increase.

The Atlas also displays areas influenced by the 4 Conquerors bosses.

Map drops are not completely random; instead a specific tier is chosen first and the map type is chosen from pool of maps completed for that tier or connected to the map the character is currently in. [1]

Atlas Completion Bonus

For each map completed under certain conditions, you gain an Atlas completion mark. Each mark adds a 1% chance for a map to drop one tier higher, with each 100% chance automatically upgrading the tier of the dropped map. The maximum map tier however cannot bypass drop restrictions, even if it would have been upgraded[2].

For example, a rare monster in a tier 6 map with 125% completion bonus:

  • a rare monster can drop tier +1 maps, as such it can drop tier 1 to 7 maps
  • it will only drop maps that are adjacent or already unlocked on the atlas
  • a tier 5 drop would be upgraded to tier 6, with a 25% chance to be upgraded to tier 7
  • a tier 6 drop would be upgraded to tier 7, but can't be upgraded any further
  • a tier 7 drop is already the highest possible drop, and can't be upgraded any further

Awakened Atlas completion bonuses are acquired by completing the map at a certain Awakening Level or higher. The current Awakening Level is equal to the number of zones on the Atlas that are influenced by four Watchstones. In order to complete an Awakening Bonus Objective it is merely required to finish the map while it is influenced by four Watchstones, while the Awakening Level requirement is met. Rarity or corruption of the map are irrelevant. Each Awakened Atlas completion gives a 0.5% chance to upgrade the tier of a map.

The following maps do not count towards Atlas completion:

Atlas Mission

Each time you complete a map, there is a chance to receive an Atlas Mission for a random master. You can use Atlas Missions to guarantee a master to spawn in your next non-unique map. Your Atlas Mission counters are tracked for each set of map tier colours: white, yellow, and red; which one you receive is the same as the tier colour of the map you received it in. Your accumulated number of Atlas Missions can be seen in the Atlas layout screen. There is no limit to how many Atlas Missions you can store. You can redeem an Atlas mission by speaking to a master then running the map from that screen.

Once per day, when you log in, you will receive one Atlas missions for each master for the tier relative to the last map you've completed (-1/+1 range). Free Atlas missions refresh at midnight UTC.

Spawning Conquerors

File:Atlas of Worlds 3.9 spawning Conquerors.png
Atlas with 4 Watchstones socketed in a region

The new end-game Atlas quest introduced in Conquerors of the Atlas requires the player to track down and defeat different Conquerors in order to fight the end-game boss The Awakener. The first step in spawning the 4 Conquerors is to reach the 4 corners of the Atlas. In this process you may discover Zana as well as different Conquerors' Citadels (which contain Watchstones Altars).

Players have to run 3 different maps from the same corner to spawn their first Conqueror. Otherwise, there is a 33% chance per map if you are running the same map. By this method, the lowest level encounters of Al-Hezmin, the Hunter, Veritania, the Redeemer, Drox, the Warlord and Baran, the Crusader can be spawned without acquiring any Watchstones.

The second to fourth encounters of the same Conqueror require the player to upgrade a region of the Atlas. Players need to discover the Altar (if applicable) of that region and insert a minimum number of Watchstone(s) in it. Typically, the second encounter requires 1 Stone, the third requires 2 Stones, and the fourth requires 3 Stones inserted into the Watchstones Altars. Inserting Watchstones also increase the map Tier of that region. The Conqueror is guaranteed to spawn if you have met: 1) Number of Watchstones requirement 2) Running a map of tier equal to or higher than[citation needed] the tier of that map on your Atlas (for example, with 1 Watchstone in Glennach Cairns, a Beach map would need to be at least tier 4 to trigger the Conqueror). If both conditions (1) and (2) are met, the Conqueror will spawn. Killing the Conqueror for the 4th time (in 4 different regions) will acquire the 4th Watchstone of that Conqueror, ending the quest. The aforementioned guaranteed spawn will be removed.

For spawning and beating a Conqueror the fifth time and beyond, it is required to insert 4 Watchstones into a region and meet the Conqueror 3 times before spawning the final arena. According to GGG, the spawn rate is 33% chance per Map or 10 maps[3] ( 3 + 3 + 3 + 1)

Optimizing Watchstone drops

Atlas progression can be divided into two parts: Pre-Awakener spawn and Post-Awakener spawn.

The Awakener fight will first be available upon obtaining 20 Wachstones and completing each Conquerors quest line. During this time the Atlas must be progressively upgraded with the obtained Watchstones in order to reach the required region level for another Conqueror to spawn.

After the quest line is completed and the Conquerors begin spawning randomly, you will be able to obtain the remaining 12 Wachstones from whichever regions still have unobtained ones. Each Conqueror spawns exactly once on the Atlas and upon defeating all four, Zana will offer another Awakener fight. Having her open the portals to the fight resets the cycle and the Conquerors will be able to spawn once more. However, to ensure this progress goes smoothly, it is important to keep a few things in mind.

Only one set of Watchstones can be obtained in any region of Atlas. For example, if you are triggering a Conqueror encounter in a region where you are only missing the Cobalt WatchstoneCobalt WatchstoneThe memories and emotions of countless victims of the Elder,
locked in stone for eternity.
Socket this into a Citadel on your Atlas to increase the Tier of Maps and reveal hidden Maps in that Citadel's Region. You can only socket one Crimson, Viridian, Cobalt or Golden Watchstone into each Citadel.
but Veritania, the Conqueror, who drops the Cobalt Watchstone, is already locked to another region of the Atlas, you will get one of the remaining three Conquerors as an encounter, even if you already obtained their Watchstones for this region. This will lead to the undesirable scenario where this Conqueror cannot drop a Watchstone after being defeated.

As mentioned before, each Conqueror can only influence one regions each cycle. When a random Conqueror encounter is triggered and an regions is influenced, the game will give you one that has yet to drop the Watchstone for that regions. However if all Watchstones were already claimed in that region, the Conqueror encounter will be wasted for the sake of obtaining more Wachstones, as one cannot drop. The same thing happens if, say, you already have three influences in other regions and the last remaining Conqueror then spawns in an region where you have already obtained the respective Watchstone.

In order to get all Watchstones as quickly as possible and not waste any encounter-cycles it is therefore advisable to:

  1. Trigger Conqueror encounters in regions that have the most unobtained Watchstones remaining.
  2. Pay attention to how many Watchstones the regions Citadel needs to have socketed, in order to spawn a Conqueror.
  3. Only run maps that match the regions current map-tier.
  4. Pre-Awakener: Obtain Watchstones equally from all regions. Ideally, this would mean that on the first Awakener encounter, after obtaining 20 Watchstones, four regions have 2 and four regions have 3 obtained Watchstones.
  5. Post-Awakener: At the beginning of each cycle, after an Awakener fight, plan ahead which Conqueror you can encounter where. Make sure every Conqueror has a region to go to where the respective Watchstone is still unobtained.
  6. Post-Awakener: Try to obtain 3 Watchstones from each region before going for the fourth and last one.
  7. ALTERNATIVELY: A straightforward approach would be to only run maps in one region, forcing Conqueror encounters only there and one after another, until all the regions Watchstones are obtained and then moving on to the next. This can prove tricky though since, especially in the beginning, it requires a quick rise in map-tiers and neglects the atlas completion bonus, which nets you higher tiered map returns.

Awakening Level

When four Watchstones are socketed to one region, it adds one Awakening Level to the Atlas. Awakening Levels increase the difficulty of all maps, but grant bonuses to item drops. It also enables Awakened Atlas completion bonuses at higher levels, granting further bonuses to map drops.

Each Awakening Level adds the following:

  • Unique Map Boss has 3% more Life
  • 3% increased effect of Modifiers on non-unique Maps
  • +1% chance for an additional connected Map to drop from Unique Map Boss
  • +0.5% chance for a Shaper Guardian Map to drop from Unique Map Boss (Tier 14+)
  • +0.5% chance for an Elder Guardian Map to drop from Unique Map Boss (Tier 14+)
  • +1% chance for an additional Unique Item to drop from Unique Map Boss
  • +1% chance for additional Map Currency Item to drop from Unique Map Boss
  • Increased chance per Awakening Level for the Conquerors of the Atlas to drop additional rewards
  • 5% increased chance for Influenced Items to drop in Maps influenced by the Conquerors of the Atlas

Currency

  • Sextants are used on Watchstones to add a special modifier to all the maps on the region where the Watchstone is socketed. Sextants last for 3 maps, and multiple Watchstones with sextant modifiers can stack.[1]

End of league transfer

When the current league ends the progress on the Atlas of Worlds is transferred to the relevant parent league. The parent league is generally Standard or Hardcore.

The merge has the following rules:[4]

  • Maps or bonus objectives completed transferred to the parent league
  • Sextant mods:
    • They will be moved to the parent league; if the map already has a mod, the parent league mods will be kept
    • Legacy modifiers continue to exist and work as long they have not been overridden

Atlas exclusive base items

This is a list of base item types that are considered end-game only base types. These items cannot be found in the acts, and are rarer than the default base types.

Version history

Version Changes
3.9.1
  • You can now run the same Map multiple times to encounter the Conquerors of the Atlas. After the first encounter it will have a 33% chance to occur again in the same Map. Running different maps will still cause it to be deterministic. Once you have encountered the final boss all are once again chance-based.
3.9.0c
  • When hunting the Conquerors of the Atlas it will now always (instead of being chance-based) spawn them in Maps of that Region as long as you are running different Maps within that Region. This means you are now required to run three different Maps within a Region they are inhabiting, instead of an average of ten Maps (33% chance). Once you have defeated the final Conqueror it returns to chance-based spawning as you now have the highest tiers of maps unlocked. We will be making more changes to this which will allow you to repeatedly run the same map (instead of forcing different ones) later.
3.9.0
  • Atlas of Worlds has been reworked.
3.5.0
  • The Atlas of Worlds has been shuffled. Most maps have changed tier and location within the Atlas.
    • From this point on, the Atlas layout will be changed at the start of every new league.
3.4.0
  • Added a new Atlas of Worlds feature: Shaper's Strongholds. These will appear once you have met the Shaper. They have multiple Shaper Influence mods active. Bosses of these maps can drop extra sextants, cartographer's chisels, Shaper-influenced items, and unique items.
3.3.0
  • Once you have completed 20 maps while the Elder and its guardians are on your atlas without actually defeating any of them, there is a chance for the Elder and its guardians to disappear and remove the Elder-influence from the maps they were on. This will make it difficult to maintain an "Elder Ring", but will also allow players who weren't capable of defeating the Elder or its guardians to clear them from their atlas.
  • Shaper memory fragments XI through to XV no longer require you to defeat the Elder or its guardians in specific map tiers. Instead, defeating each guardian and the elder within ANY red-tier map will get you one of these fragments.
  • You can no longer get Shaper memory fragments XI through to XV from a map if you are not the map's owner.
3.1.0
  • Introducing the War for the Atlas expansion.
  • If you complete a map that was created before the expansion, it will complete a chain of maps from the start pointing on the Atlas up until the tier of map you completed. Shaped and Elder items do not drop on these maps. Elder Guardians also cannot spawn from them. Shaper and Elder areas will not be influenced on the Atlas.
2.4.0
  • Introduced to the game. Non-unique maps pre-Atlas of Worlds do not count towards Atlas completion, even for maps where the map type and tier are identical to the current version. Older versions of unique maps will count towards Atlas completion, including the bonus objective, but the Shaper's Orb does not drop in old versions (affecting Oba's Cursed TroveOba's Cursed Trove
