Both these items are extremely convenient for low life energy shield builds because they prevent [[Chaos Damage|chaos damage]] from bypassing energy shield.  They are not, however, necessary for such a build if the character has sufficiently high chaos resistance and other defences.

Definition

Low life is a condition that applies when life falls below 35%. However, it does not work if maximum life is set to 1 due to Chaos Inoculation. Linking auras or other mana-reservating skills to Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Blood Magic" is an easy way to trigger the low life condition.

The low life state unlocks several interesting aspects for a character, but can be difficult to maintain efficiently. See maintaining low life for more information.

Trivia

Since version 0.9.6, the player light changes to noticeably reddish over the 33% - 37% range to make it easier to judge when the condition applies.
