Path Of Exile - Guide - Quality Basics

Quality improves the signature stat of an item such as physical damage on weapons and evasion for evasion helmets or adds additional bonuses to skill gems.

Mechanics

Quality can be applied to most equipment (quivers and jewels are the exceptions), as well as maps and strongboxes. Any item with at least 1% quality will have a Superior prefix when dropped on the ground but not when in the inventory.

Each item type has a currency item associated with it that increases its quality. Quality does not affect the requirements for using an item or the mana cost of skills.

All items are normally capped at 20% quality and each currency that affect quality will improve:

  • normal items by 5%.
  • magic items by 2%.
  • rare and unique items by 1%.

Increasing the quality on weapons and armours also makes crafting sockets and links with Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Jeweller's Orb" and Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Orb of Fusing" easier. Each 1% quality improves the result by 1%. This makes obtaining many sockets and links 20% more likely on 20% quality items and even likelier on 30% quality items.

Quality is normally capped at 20%. However, there are certain crafting methods that can increase quality beyond that, including:

  • Corrupting a gem or flask can increase its quality, to up to 23% and 30%, respectively.
  • Beastcrafting recipe for "Corrupt an item with 30% Quality"
  • A resonator with Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Perfect Fossil" socketed, randomizing its quality to 15-30%
  • Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Tainted Blacksmith's Whetstone" and Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Tainted Armourer's Scrap" randomly sets a corrupted equipment's quality to 0-29%.
  • Monsters of magic or rare rarity and some chests (e.g. Delve, Heist) can drop items with quality higher than 20%.
  • Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Ixchel's Temptation" can have up to 200% quality.
  • Necropolis crafting can create weapons and armour with up to 30% quality using corpses that add quality to the crafted item.
  • Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Infused Engineer's Orb" can increase a strongbox's quality to up to 30%. Infused Engineer's Orb no longer drop in game.

Effect on items

The quality is summed together with other local #% increased stats. For example a piece of armour that naturally gives 100 armour that has +50 to Armour and 90% increased Armour would now, with 20% quality, give .

Jewellery Catalysts Depends on catalyst; affects implicit and explicit affixes

Certain Harvest crafting crafts can apply enchantments on weapons and body armours that could change the effect of quality on that item instead of the default quality (weapon physical damage or body armour defences). This does not affect other aspects of quality such as the chance to have a certain number of sockets or links.

Skill gems

Both skill gems and support gems may have quality. Every skill is affected by quality differently, but it frequently improves the damage dealt with the skill or provides small improvements like increased Area of Effect. Even those that do have their damage improved will see different improvement rates for a given amount of quality.

The quality of skill gems may be improved with a Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Gemcutter's Prism". These upgrades always improve a skill's quality by 1%. Alternatively, a level 20 non-awakened support gem and a Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Gemcutter's Prism" can be vendored (sold to a NPC) for a level 1 gem with 20% quality.

The effect of quality scales with the base quality effect, however, only whole numbers will be granted (and thus the effect will always be rounded down); for example 3% quality on a gem with 0.5% effect will only grant 1% effect and not 1.5% effect. Effects with some degree of fractions are rounded to their natural bases (i.e. seconds will be rounded to milliseconds, etc.).

It is possible to get a gem's quality above 20%. Corrupting a gem can increase its quality by up to 23%. Module Error: No results found for item using search term "item_name = Enhance Support" and certain gear modifiers can also improve gem quality.

  • A substantial amount of damage-dealing skills have had their quality stats buffed. In most cases they will be significantly more powerful than before, and also more interesting. Many supports have also received changes to their quality stats.
  • The vendor recipe for turning a Level 20 Gem into a 20% Quality Level 1 version of that Gem no longer works with Skill Gems, as the benefit Quality provides to damage dealing Skills is now more powerful. The vendor recipe can now only be used with non-Awakened Support Gems.
