Template:Gem Infobox Blade Vortex creates an ethereal blade that spins around the caster that deals physical damage, each blade lasts for the minimum duration of 5 seconds. Because of the duration nature of this skill, it is possible to have multiple blades active at the same time, up to a maximum of 50 blades. Once the limit is reached, creating a new blade will simply remove the oldest existing active blade, similar to Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Summon Raging Spirit". Please choose only one of the following ids:
SummonRagingSpiritRoyale - Maximum 10 Summoned Raging Spirits, Base duration is 4.00 seconds, Minions deal 20% less Damage, Minions cannot Taunt Enemies (page)
AshwakerSummonRagingSpiritOnKill - Maximum 20 Summoned Raging Spirits, Base duration is 5.00 seconds, 25% chance to Trigger this Spell on Kill, Minions deal 18% more Damage, Minions cannot Taunt Enemies (page)
.

Despite the fact that it does physical damage, Blade Vortex is a spell and not an attack. It does not utilize weapon damage in any way. Blade Vortex is one of three skills that work in this manner, the other two being Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Ethereal Knives". Please choose only one of the following ids:
WraithEtherealKnives - Deals (192-692) to (288-1038) Physical Damage, Deals 15% less Damage, 25% reduced Cast Speed, 25% increased Projectile Speed, Fires 9 additional Projectiles (page)
MonsterEtherealKnives - Deals (24-625) to (36-937) Physical Damage, 20% less Cast Speed, (0-25)% increased Projectile Speed, Fires 9 additional Projectiles (page)
and Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Bladefall". Please choose only one of the following ids:
IzaroDaemonBladefall - Deals (16-1521) to (23-2282) Physical Damage, +5 Volleys, 5% less Damage per Volley (page)
ExileWitchBladefall - Deals (16-1521) to (23-2282) Physical Damage, +5 Volleys, 5% less Damage per Volley (page)
.

Skill Functions and Interactions

Physical Damage: Because Blade Vortex deals physical damage, it can be boosted by supports and skills that are more commonly used to modify attacks, such as the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Added Fire Damage" support gem and the Hatred aura.

Spell Damage: Since Blade Vortex is considered a Spell its damage can be amplified by Spell Damage on items and passives from the skill tree, as well as support gems that increase spell damage.

Leech: Leech effects that apply to Spell damage and to damage types dealt by Blade Vortex (Physical by default) will work as usual. Note that leech effects which apply to Attacks do not apply to Blade Vortex because it is a Spell, not an Attack.

Area of Effect: Due to the fact that Blade Vortex has the AoE tag, increases and decreases in AoE will augment the radius in which the skill deals damage e.g. (Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Increased Area of Effect", Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Concentrated Effect" and Carcass JackCarcass Jack

Calculating Total DPS

The in-game tooltip calculates its damage per second (DPS) with the assumption that each cast hits exactly 1 time, in practice your DPS is much different. To calculate your peak sustained Blade Vortex DPS you must multiply the tooltip DPS by the amount of times a blade hits in its lifetime. Blade Vortex's blades always hit at a fixed rate of 2 times per second (regardless of cast speed), so knowing this there are two different methods depending on if you can reach the 50 stack maximum:

If you can't sustain 50 stacks:

Sustained DPS = Tooltip DPS * Blade Duration * 2

Note that with base duration, this is simply:

Sustained DPS = Tooltip DPS * 10

If you can sustain 50 stacks, then you need to do something a bit different because the tooltip does not account for the 50 stack limit. You must determine the average damage of a blade hit, then multiply by the number of blade hits per second:

Sustained DPS = Blade Damage * Hits Per Second

Blade Damage = Tooltip DPS / Casts Per Second

Hits Per Second = Stacks * 2

Simplifying, we can calculate our sustained DPS with one formula:

Sustained DPS = Tooltip DPS / Casts Per Second * 100
