Burning
Burning refers to any fire damage over time effect.
Mechanics
There are several sources of burning, for example:
- Ignite

Different sources of burning damage stack cumulatively, but multiple applications from the same source do not. Stacking rules for buffs, debuffs or other effects are defined in terms of that specific buff, debuff or effect interacting with other applications of the same effect, not with other ones that are similar.[1]
All burning effects will remain present on the target until they have run their course, but for each source, only the one with the highest damage per second will cause damage at any given moment. Humanoids, Monkeys and Snakes will flee while burning.[2]
As a damage over time effect, burning damage itself is not a hit and cannot benefit from effects that require a hit, such as Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Fire Penetration" (but not reduced elemental resistances), added damage, leech, and so forth.
Burning damage can be increased by the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Increased Burning Damage" support gem, the Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Vulnerability". Please choose only one of the following ids:

IzaroVulnerability - Base duration is (5.00-6.45) seconds, Cursed enemies take (15-25)% increased Physical Damage, Attacks Hits against Cursed Enemies have 25% chance to inflict Bleeding (page) curse, and the following types of passive nodes:
- increased elemental damage
- increased fire damage
- increased burning damage
- increased damage over time
- increased damage
Burning damage which scales with damage dealt by a hit (Ex. Ignite) benefits most from increased fire and elemental damage effects since it enhances the damage of both the initial hit and burning damage, while increased burning and damage over time only applies to the damage over time after the hit. On the other hand, abilities that deal damage over time exclusively (Ex. Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Righteous Fire". Please choose only one of the following ids:

It is important to note that Burning and Ignite are NOT directly synonymous. While all ignites deal burning damage, not all forms of burning come from ignites. Ignite is differentiated by the fact that it is an inflicted Elemental status ailment associated with hits that deal fire damage (unless otherwise modified to come from another damage type). Burning is not always caused by an ignite. This is a key point when considering buffs and supports such as Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Elemental Focus", which prohibits any Elemental status ailment with the linked skill. However since burning damage itself is not an ailment, this support can be used to increase the damage of burning damage for skills that deal burns without igniting, such as Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Scorching Ray".
