Puncture is an attack skill that applies a bleeding debuff to its targets. While bleeding, the target takes damage over time based on how much damage was dealt on the initial hit. The bleeding deals more damage while moving. Puncture works with bows, daggers, claws or swords.

Mechanics

Increasing the duration of Puncture via the % increased Skill Effect Duration modifier, the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Increased Duration" support gem, or the Temporal Chains curse causes the Puncture to deal the same damage per second over a greater period of time.

Separate applications of Puncture do not stack cumulatively. Each Puncture remains present on the target until it runs its course, but only the one with the highest damage per second will cause damage at any given moment.[1] For example, assume an enemy is inflicted with Puncture for 100 damage per second, then after 3 seconds it is inflicted with a second Puncture for 50 damage per second. The outcome will be 100 damage per second for the first 5 seconds, followed by 50 damage per second for the remaining 3 seconds of the second Puncture.

As a damage over time effect, Puncture's damage can be affected positively or negatively by some damage modifiers. Notably, modifiers to spell damage and attack damage (also often referred to as damage with x weapon) do not apply to the Puncture DoT as it is not a spell or attack.[2] The following modifiers will directly affect the damage of the Puncture damage over time effect; note that some of these modifiers apply only to the DoT whereas some also apply to the initial hit:

  • Damage over Time modifiers
  • Damage modifiers
  • Physical Damage modifiers
  • Projectile Damage modifiers
  • Trap Damage modifiers if applied with the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Trap" support gem
  • Mine Damage modifiers if applied with the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Remote Mine" support gem
  • Totem Damage modifiers if applied with the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Ranged Attack Totem" support gem
  • Area Damage modifiers if applied by a secondary hit with the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Melee Splash" support gem

Version history

Version Changes
2.0.0
  • Now grants 1% increased skill effect duration per 1% quality (was 1.5% per 1% quality).
1.3.0
  • Puncture now bleeds for 10% of hit damage at all levels and 50% of hit damage while moving.
1.2.0
  • Fixed a bug where Puncture did not benefit from Increased Item Rarity or Increased Item Quantity.
1.0.2
  • Generic modifiers to damage dealt will now apply to damage over time that your character causes. Damage over time is not spell damage, nor attack damage, so modifiers specific to those types will not apply. Non-specific "increased damage" modifiers will apply to damage over time. Type-specific modifiers will apply as well.
1.0.0d
  • Fixed a bug where monster deaths from Puncture were not awarded as kills correctly.
0.10.8
  • Increased damage at high levels and Physical Damage % added to it that increases each level, to match other similar skills.
  • May now be used with Two Handed Swords.
0.10.0
  • Increases to physical damage taken now apply correctly to physical degeneration
    (such as damage from Puncture).
0.9.13
  • Puncture is now scaled to start much stronger with a flatter progression to match
other melee skills that scale weapon damage.
0.9.11j
  • Fixed Puncture's quality bonus so that it now works.
0.9.11
  • Fixed a bad interaction between on-drink flask effects and Puncture.
0.9.10
  • Fixed a rare bug that would cause you to take damage from Puncture indefinitely until you left the instance.
  • Fixed a bug where being punctured multiple times would cause incorrect behaviour.
0.9.7b
  • Removed the 1% pierce chance.
0.9.7
  • Puncture has been added to the game.
