A poisoned cannibal
This page is about the poison effect. For the support gem, see Poison (support gem).
A poisoned target will take increased chaos damage over time [1]. The poison effect is not considered to be a status ailment [2] unlike Ignite or Bleed, which also deal damage over time.

Mechanics

A hit of damage that has a chance to poison is capable of inflicting poison. Only physical and chaos damage are able to inflict poison.[3]

Unlike status ailments, separate applications of poison do stack cumulatively. Each poison effect remains present on the target dealing chaos damage over time until it runs its course.[3]

There is no limit to the number of poison stacks an enemy can have. [1]. A single hit can apply a maximum of one poison stack [2].

Duration

The default base duration of poison is 2 seconds. Viper Strike inflicts poison with a base duration of 8 seconds.

The duration can be extended by sources of increased Skill Effect Duration, such as the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Increased Duration" or the nodes in the Passive Skill Tree. [1]

Increasing poison duration with the Temporal Chains curse results in a longer-lasting poison that deals damage at the same rate.

Damage

The base damage per second dealt by a given application of poison equals 10% of the physical and chaos damage dealt by the hit which applied that particular instance of poison.[1]

In general—because poison is a damage over time effect that deals chaos damage—its damage is affected by Stats that modify Chaos Damage, Damage Over Time and Poison Damage.[1]

If poison is applied by a projectile, then its damage is also modified by the Projectile Damage stat.[1]

Version history

Version Changes
2.1.0
  • Rather than dealing the damage of the highest hit (as Ignite does), poison can now have multiple stacks. This means that every hit counts, rather than just the occasional big hit. This also lets it scale much better towards end-game, and differentiates it from other damage-over-time effects.
  • Poison can now only be applied by Chaos and Physical damage. This is for both thematic reasons, and to have it act as a reward for builds that have less of a focus on auras and elemental supports for damage boosts.
  • These poison changes are also reflected in monsters.
