Hinekora
Hinekora, also known as the "Mother of Death" or "Mother of the Dead", is a major Karui god that rules over the Halls of the Dead and oversees the Trial of the Ancestors.
Lore
Hinekora is depicted wearing an oversized crown/mask of threads and bones adorned with a giant green eye. She also wears a garb made of bones and threads, and her skin is painted in purple and green all over her body. She is also seen to have extraordinarily long hair many times longer than her body.
Hinekora plays a significant role in the myths and lives of the Karui people. Hinekora both collects and watches over the souls of the dead and has the ability to foresee the future through prophecies. These prophecies are typically interpreted by Hatungo ("wise woman"), Karui people with the ability of "second sight". Hatungo live between the realms of life and death and can often live hundreds of years, until Hinekora wishes to reclaim them. The Seeing Stone and Yama the White are both granted power by Hinekora's hair.
Hinekora has the ability to know everything about the living realms of Wraeclast and its surrounding lands, but appears to have no power over or ability to foresee otherworldly entities like Beyond demons or the Eldritch Horrors. It was also possible for beings from the human realm to avoid Hinekora and death (e.g. the Pale Court), though she is still able to observe them. She is in opposition to the god Chaos; while both observe the future, Chaos desires a future with unpredictable outcomes, while Hinekora wants the future to follow a set path guided by her prophecies.
In myth, Hinekora was known to have whipped Kitava using her hairHinekora's Hair"What we steal in life we repay in death."
- Karui Proverb, keeping him locked in the depths of the underworld without food and water. She foresaw the Slumbering of the Gods, and before she fell into a deep sleep, she created the Halls of the Dead as a place for Karui souls to go to after their death.
