Skill gem

Skill gem (known as Active Skill Gems in item filter), is an item class which grants skills to the player by placing them into an item socket. Similar to support gems, skill gems can gain experience and level up increasing both their Attribute(s) and character level requirement as well as the effect of the stats granted by the skill.

Skill gems can be further augmented by placing appropriate support gems into a linked socket.

Skill gems have gem tags which are used to categorize them, but note that gem tags are not intended to indicate whether a skill gem can be supported by other gems or whether specific stats (or modifiers) apply.

While support gems are referred to as "support gems" by passive skills and item mods, such as Catarina's +# to Level of Socketed Support Gems, item filters refer to them as Support Skill Gems.

3.23.0	Alternate quality gems, labyrinth helmet enchantments and unique threshold jewels are all systems that were trying to subtly modify the behaviour of skills. With this expansion these have been combined into a new system called Transfigured Gems that allows us to fully achieve the goal of these three systems, and then some. Transfigured Gems are alternate versions of existing skill gems that have different functionality and balance than their regular versions. We have added many of these, with interesting variations that drastically change how existing skills play. Some existing skill gems have had stats or interactions removed from the base gem and moved to the Transfigured versions to provide more focused support for pre-existing alternate playstyles. A substantial amount of damage-dealing skills have had their quality stats buffed. In most cases they will be significantly more powerful than before, and also more interesting. Many supports have also received changes to their quality stats. Anomalous, Divergent and Phantasmal Quality Gems have been removed from the game. Existing alternate Quality Gems now have the base Quality effect found on the respective Gem.

0.9.3	Hybrid skill gems now have a primary attribute and are changed to 60/40 alignment.
0.8.6	Skill and support gems can now have quality, like equipment. Each gem is affected by quality in a specific way - for example, additional damage or attack speed. Skill gems from quest rewards have zero quality.
0.8.4	Raised attribute requirements on all skill gems. Many gems will no longer be usable until you gain more attributes.
0.8.3	Changed the requirements of all skill gems to take into account the new attribute equation.
