Trigger effects causes a supported skill gem to activate when a specified condition is met, without spending its mana cost or requiring a cast animation[1]. They have slightly different behaviour depending on whether they are an active gem or linked to a trigger gem or item.
Active and support trigger gems
- Active trigger skills (counter-attacks) will, when their condition is met, trigger an automatic melee attack to occur. This attack uses no mana and does not interrupt the players other actions. They do not require any supports to function, but any supports linked will apply to the melee attack. Active trigger skills can be supported by trigger support skills which require an attack skill as part of their triggering condition.
- Support trigger skills must be supporting a spell and will, when their condition is met, trigger the casting of that spell without requiring a cast animation or mana. Some support trigger skills must also be supporting a second active skill as the basis for their trigger condition. For example, Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Cast on Critical Strike" must be linked to both an attack gem and a spell gem to function - When the attack crits, the spell will be cast. In this case, supports in the chain will support both the triggering attack and the triggered spell, if applicable to both. When an active skill is linked to a trigger effect, it cannot be cast by the player manually. Supported skills also have a 500ms cooldown between each trigger.
Interactions
Multiple trigger supports: A single attack skill cannot be supported by multiple trigger support gems or item - a chain which contains more than one trigger condition will cause active skills in the chain to be disabled.
Multiple triggered skills: Only one supported skill will be cast per trigger. The spell that is triggered is determined based on the order in which it is socketed, and will cast supported spells in sequence, even across multiple attacks. For example, a MjölnerMjölner

Traps and mines: Spells that are made into traps/mines by the use of the Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Trap Support" or Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Remote Mine Support" gems cannot be triggered by any trigger effect but will still be disabled when linked to an applicable trigger gem. DetonateMines - First Mine Detonates Instantly, Mines get 10% more Detonation Speed for each prior Mine in Detonation Sequence (page) skill gem, however, can be linked to a trigger gem. Traps, mines, and totems also cannot trigger Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Curse on Hit".
Cooldowns: Trigger effects cannot bypass cooldowns such as that of Module Error: Too many skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Cold Snap". Please choose only one of the following ids:

Targeting: Directional spells will cast towards the triggering enemy. If the enemy was killed by the triggering attack, it will cast towards the cursor or in a random direction.
Totems: It is not possible to summon any kind of totem using trigger gems. Totems can not trigger any further effects themself as well.
Vaal gems: Trigger effects cannot trigger vaal skill gems, even if the player has the required amount of souls.
Warcries: Since warcries are neither spells nor attacks, there are currently no trigger effects which interact with them.
Order
Generally the order in which skill gems are linked only holds importance for trigger gems and for rounding the mana cost. The order for sockets used is:
1 | ⇒ | 2 |
⇓ | ||
4 | ⇐ | 3 |
⇓ | ||
5 | ⇒ | 6 |
If multiple trigger gems are socketed in several equipped items the order will be:
- Main hand ⇒ Amulet ⇒ Helm ⇒ Off hand ⇒ Body armour ⇒ Gloves ⇒ Boots
Gems
There are several gems with the Trigger present in the game. Some are offensive, some defensive, and some are counter-attacks:
