Permanent Leagues

Standard is the default league and has no modifiers. Hardcore has the hardcore modifier, meaning characters who die are moved to Standard. Hardcore is equivalent to permadeath in other RPGs, though your character and items are not automatically deleted.

Characters used in certain races are afterwards sent to a Void League instead of being deleted. You can't play these characters or access their inventory; void characters can only be deleted or kept as a sort of trophy.

Challenge Leagues

Every four months, two new leagues are created and the previous two challenge leagues are removed. These leagues are intended to introduce and test new content while providing players with a fresh economy.[1] In addition, each pair of leagues has a set of eight optional challenges that can be completed for a prize.

The current leagues are Domination and Nemesis, starting October 23rd and ending February 23rd.[2]

  • Domination: A variety of powerful shrines spawn along with large groups of monsters that receive powerful buffs from the shrine. If you get close to a shrine and "tag" it, you receive the shrine's bonuses for a short time.
  • Nemesis: A hardcore league where rare monsters have one guaranteed mod from the Nemesis Pool, which can make a fight substantially harder. Rare monsters are more powerful, make players weaker, or have special effects on death.
  • Prismatic Ring cannot drop as a base type in Domination and Nemesis league but it can be created with a new vendor recipe. Unique Prismatic Rings can still drop in these leagues.
  • There are six new Unique items that can drop in either challenge league, plus one that can only drop in Domination (The GullThe Gull

  • Module Error: No skills found with q_where = skill.active_skill_name="Item Quantity" can not be obtained in these leagues.
  • Increased Item Quantity modifiers cannot spawn on Magic and Rare items in these leagues, but remain on unique items.

From June 8th to October 8th:

  • Anarchy: Rogue Exiles will sometimes spawn in areas and attack you. The rogue exiles were later added to the rest of the leagues and spawn at around 60% of the rate that they appear in Anarchy. They were also rebalanced.[1]
  • Onslaught: A hardcore league with monsters moving and attacking/casting 20% faster.

Race Leagues

Main page: Races

Race leagues are temporary leagues created specifically for a single race event.

These leagues have their own stash. At the end of the event, characters and their stashed items will be moved to the parent league, which is typically Hardcore or Void league. The player's race stash will be moved as well and may be placed in remove-only stash tabs.

Leagues Modifiers

Other than Standard, leagues generally have modifiers to add special rules that alter the way the game is played[3].

Ancestral

First introduced in S1E51.

  • All areas except in towns have enemy totems spread across the zone that grant benefits to your enemies and attempt to kill you.

Blood Magic

First introduced in S1E61.

  • Characters act as if they have the Blood Magic passive allocated. This will cause said characters to consume life instead of mana for skills with mana cost and mana reservations.

Cut-Throat

  • Equipped items are dropped on death.
  • Players are allowed to enter others' instances at will.
  • The death experience penalty is increased by 30% on all difficulty levels.
  • Players are hostile to one another by default when not partied.
  • Killing a player awards their death penalty experience to the killer.
  • Player capacity in non-town instances is doubled. This does not increase the maximum party size.

Descent

Main page: Descent
  • Descent was the signature race of Season 3. It is modeled after roguelike games: players fight from the top of a dungeon down through increasingly difficult levels.[4]
  • If you disconnect or log out and continue playing later, you spawn at the entrance of your current area.
  • Has the hardcore modifier, and dying will transfer your character to the Void league.
  • No access to the stash or any vendors, and therefore no reason to pick up valuable items that you won't use.
  • A provision chest at the beginning contains some starting items and gems.
  • The end of each level contains an Alluring Chest and a Curious Chest. Players can open only one.

Descent Champions

  • Introduced in Season 5, Descent: Champions was an extension of the Descent race type. Accordingly, most of the mechanics of Descent are the same here.
  • One key difference is that in addition to being given access to a provision chest at the start of the race, each player may also select 2 unique items: one from each of two chests.
  • Another key difference is that the path players take forward is not fixed, as it is in Descent. There are multiple paths forward, and even side-areas with their own bonuses should the player take the time to complete them.
  • Finally, in addition to the race point reward systems of Descent, players also gain race points by killing certain boss mobs. Being first to kill the boss is irrelevant; all players that kill a reward boss will receive the corresponding reward.

Endless Ledge

  • Players start in one end of the Ledge and fight their way through the area. The exit leads to another instance of the Ledge with higher monster level, and this repeats forever.[5]
  • If you disconnect or log out then continue playing, you spawn at the entrance of your current area.
  • Has the hardcore modifier, and dying will transfer your character to the Void league.
  • No access to the stash or any vendors, and therefore no reason to pick up valuable items that you won't use.
  • A provision chest at the beginning contains some starting items and gems.
  • The first Ledge is normal, but after that monsters, bosses, and biome will be fully random, similar to maps. The area layout will always mimic the Ledge.
  • After the race, characters are transferred to the Void league.

Famine

Fixed Seed

  • All instances of a given area will have the same area layout, for all players.
  • The minimap will automatically be fully revealed.
  • Multiple Race Events regularly will have the same seed. That is, the instance area layouts will be same in all the races of a fixed seed set.

Hardcore

  • Characters who die are moved to the Standard league.

Immolation

Lethal

Multiple Projectile

First introduced in S1E53.

No Projectiles

  • Players deal no damage with projectile-based skills and attacks.

Rogue

  • All areas except towns have a rogue exile, which spawns at a random location within the area.

Solo

  • Players are not allowed to form parties.

Turbo

  • Monsters run, attack and cast 60% faster.

Version History

Version Changes 0.10.8d
  • Renamed Default League to Standard League.
