Template:Passive

Mind Over Matter (often referred to as MoM) is a keystone passive skill that allows the character's mana to absorb a portion of the damage dealt to life.

Mechanics

30% of the damage that would be inflicted on the character's life is deducted from mana instead. If the character has insufficient mana, then the remainder of the damage will be taken from life.

Mana/Life ratio

For mana to not run out before life the unreserved mana should be at least 43% of unreserved life, granted that 30% of damage is taken from mana before life.

Derivation of the mana/life ratio [Expand]

X% of Damage is taken from Mana before Life

Let , to completely remove all mana the damage, , has to be:

The life removed can then be written as:

Solving equation 1 for :

3 in 2 gives:

Solving 4 for :

The ratio leads to exactly all life and mana being removed from a one-shot. If the ratio is less, i.e. , then mana will have run out before all life is removed.

The table below show the necessary mana/life ratio required for varying amounts of Mind over Matter.

X mana/life ratio
0 0
10% 11%
20% 25%
30% 43%
40% 67%
50% 100%
60% 150%
70% 233%
80% 400%
90% 900%

Examples

  • A good way to think of why the unreserved mana amount should be 43% as much as our life, and not simply 30% as much, is to start with the damage of the hit you're about to take.
    • If you take an 8000 damage hit, and you have 6000 life, and 2600 mana, you will take 8000*0.3 = 2400 damage to mana, and 8000*.7 = 5600 damage to life. You'll be left with 400 life and 200 mana.
      • Note that 2600 is 43.33% of 6000. 30% of 6000 is 1800. If we only had 1800 mana, the 8000 damage hit would drain our mana pool completely (dealing 22.5% of the 8000 damage shot to mana) and then deal the rest (77.5% of the 8000 damage shot = 6200 more damage) to our life pool, killing the player. Because, while 1800 is 30% of 6000, it is not 30% of a hit that takes all but one life from your life pool.
    • If you took a shot that left you with 1 life, then it would have dealt 5999/0.7 = 8570 raw damage, and it would have dealt 2571 damage to your mana pool (and you'd be left with 29 mana in your mana pool).

Interactions

Eldritch Battery and Chaos damage

If the node Eldritch Battery is chosen energy shield protects mana instead of life. This energy shield will absorb the converted damage before it is applied on mana. Since chaos damage bypasses energy shield the chaos damage will then be applied directly on mana.

Chaos Inoculation

Mind Over Matter is rendered useless in conjunction with the Chaos Inoculation keystone. Damage is applied to energy shield before life, and as a result there is no opportunity for any damage to be absorbed by mana.[1]

Damage taken gained as mana when hit

If the character gains mana when hit with the x% of Damage taken Gained as Mana when Hit modifier, that mana is gained over the next 4 seconds. This modifier can help with maintaining mana and can be found on certain unique items and passive skills:
