Certain [[Skills|skills]] have an Area of Effect ('''AoE''' for short), which is a circular area of effect. These skills contain the [[Keyword#AoE|AoE]] [[Keyword|keyword]]. The simplest examples are [[Shock Nova]], [[Ice Nova]] and [[Sweep]].
{{about|the game mechanic|the support gem|Increased Area of Effect Support}}

Skills like [[Cleave]] and [[Ground Slam]] that have effects that are in a cone are effectively cut outs of circles.
[[Image:Ground_Slam_skill_screenshot.jpg|thumb|{{il|Ground Slam|Ground Slam's}} "wave" area of effect]]

[[Ice Spear]] is not an Area of Effect skill, it is a [[Projectile]] that deals damage on impact. How large the projectile is determines the hit, and is not affected by Area of Effect.
'''Area of effect''' (often referred to as '''AoE''') refers to mechanics (such as skills, auras, and monster abilities) that apply to an area of the ground (rather than targeting a particular character, monster, etc.).

However, [[Fireball]] is also a [[Projectile]] [[Spells|spell]]. Upon impact, [[Fireball]] deals a small Area of Effect (explosion) around the impact point.
Many AoE mechanics deal damage, but AoE mechanics can have other effects. For example, [[aura]]s produce positive effects on allies within the area, while [[curse]]s like {{il|Temporal Chains}} produce negative effects on enemies.

[[Shock Nova]] has two Area of Effect values, one for the inner ring and one for the outer ring.
While AoE mechanics can affect multiple characters or monsters within the area, not all mechanics that can affect multiple characters or monsters are AoE mechanics. For example, {{il|Ice Spear}} targets a single monster rather than an area, so it is not an AoE skill, even though it creates [[Pierce|piercing]] [[projectile]]s that can hit other nearby monsters as well.

When using a Passive or [[Skills#Support Gem|Support]] increase on the radius, all radius values in the skill will be modified, even if the skill does not do damage. The passives that are more specific (increase radius of [[Aura]]) will only apply to that specific group.
__TOC__

When a Passive or [[Skills#Support Gem|Support]] increases the area damage, it will only be applicable to skills that deal damage on that Area of Effect. For example, with [[Fireball]], that damage bonus will go into effect only when the projectile explodes on last target struck and won't kick if the projectile pierced, chained or forked.
==Usage==
The term "area of effect" or "AoE" is used in several different ways:
* It can describe the mechanic itself. ("{{il|Molten Strike}} is an AoE skill.")
* It can describe the area affected by the mechanic. ("{{il|Vengeance}} has a circular area of effect around the character.")
* It can describe what the mechanic does to the characters or monsters within the area. ("[[Gruthkul, Mother of Despair|Gruthkul's]] slam attack does AoE physical damage.")

Area of Effect does not affect the trigger radius of [[Traps  and Mines]], but it can apply to effects cast by the trap or mine. [[Fire Trap]], for example, has an area of effect, and is affected by it. [[Bear Trap]] does not, and is not. If supporting a spell with the {{sl|Trap}} support gem, then it will be affected if it's a spell that has an area of effect.
==Examples==
The simplest examples of AoE mechanics are skills like {{il|Shock Nova}}, {{il|Ice Nova}} and {{il|Sweep}}, which create circular areas of effect. Other AoE skills like {{il|Cleave}} and {{il|Ground Slam}} create cone-shaped areas of effect, while others like {{il|Flame Surge}} or {{il|Glacial Cascade}} have more complicated areas of effect.

Same goes for [[Totem]]s. If the effect the totem uses has an area of effect, it will get the bonus from the passive.
==How modifiers to AoE sizes work==
==Area of Effect Skills==
[[Support gem]]s and other mechanics can increase or decrease the size of an area of effect, almost always by a percentage, e.g. {{c|mod|30% increased Area of Effect}}. These percentages refer to the ''total amount of ground'' covered by the area of effect, not to the area of effect's radius, diameter, or other dimensions. For example, a {{c|mod|100% increased Area of Effect}} modifier applied to {{il|Shock Nova}}'s circular area of effect will double the area of ground covered by the circle. The mathematics of that mean that the circle's radius and diameter will increase by around 40%.
There are currently 25 Area of Effect skills aside from auras, curses, and totems.

! Skill ! class="unsortable" | Description
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Cleave}}
| Deals damage with all equipped weapons to enemies in a 180 degree arc in front of the player. When dual wielding, equipment requirement applies to both weapons, and each weapon does reduced damage. As the skill levels up, damage increases. Requires an axe, sword, two-handed axe, or two-handed sword.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Enduring Cry}}
| Taunts all nearby enemies to attack the player. Endurance charges are added proportional to the number of surrounding enemies. As the skill levels up, number of endurance charges added increases. Higher quality Enduring Cry gems add more endurance charges.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Ground Slam}}
| Damages and stuns all enemies in a 90 degree arc in front of the player. As the skill levels up, damage increases. Requires a mace, two-handed mace, or staff.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Infernal Blow}}
| Deals damage to an enemy, with some physical damage converted to fire damage. If the enemy dies soon after being hit, they will explode, dealing fire damage to nearby enemies. As the skill levels up, damage increases. Higher quality Infernal Blow gems have increased Area of Effect radius. Requires an axe, mace, sword, two-handed axe, two-handed mace, two-handed sword, staff, or unarmed
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Leap Slam}}
| The player leaps through the air, damaging enemies where they land. Some enemies are knocked backwards. As the skill levels up, damage increases. Higher quality Leap Slam gems cause enemies to be stunned for longer. Requires an axe, mace, sword, two-handed axe, two-handed mace, two-handed sword, or staff.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Molten Shell}}
| Summons fiery elemental shields providing additional armour for a short duration. If cumulative damage prevented by your blocking or armour reaches a threshold, the shields explode outwards, dealing fire damage to surrounding enemies.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Sweep}}
| Deals damage to enemies in a 300 degree arc in front of and around the player, and knocks some of them back. As the skill levels up, damage increases. Higher quality Sweep gems knock enemies back further. Requires a two-handed axe, two-handed mace, or staff.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Detonate Dead}}
| Explodes an unused corpse, dealing fire and physical damage to nearby enemies.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Explosive Arrow}}
| Fires an arrow which inflicts a short duration fuse charge on the enemy. Applying additional charges extends the duration. When the target dies or the fuses expire, the charges explode, dealing fire splash damage to nearby enemies. The splash distance is proportional to the number of charges upon death.  Explosive charges can be increased up to five. Attempting to apply any more than five charges will reset the fuse timer without adding additional charges.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Fire Trap}}
| Throws a trap that explodes when triggered, leaving an area of burning ground that damages enemies who walk through it.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Freeze Mine}}
| Lays a remote mine that you can detonate to freeze all enemies in the area.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Ice Shot}}
| Fires an arrow that chills its target and creates a patch of ground ice.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Lightning Arrow}}
| Fires a charged arrow at the target, causing them to be struck by a bolt of lightning which damages up to 3 nearby enemies.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Poison Arrow}}
| Fires an arrow which explodes in a cloud of poison. Enemies who enter the cloud are poisoned for a short time, taking chaos damage. Your arrows themselves also add additional chaos damage.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Rain of Arrows}}
| Fires a large number of arrows into the air, to land at the target after a short delay.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Reave}}
| Attacks a small area in front of you. Each consecutive Reave that hits an enemy increases the area of effect.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Arctic Breath}}
| Fires a frozen Projectile that leaves a trail of ground ice beneath it. It explodes on impact, creating more ground ice and damaging targets within an area.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Cold Snap}}
| Ice crystals protrude from the ground at target location. Monsters in this area take damage and become frozen. This spell can deliver Area of Effect cold damage to any place within line of sight. It has no maximum range.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Discharge}}
| Discharge all the character’s charges to deal elemental damage to all nearby monsters.  All damage from expended charges is dealt simultaneously within a radius centered around the caster.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Fireball}}
| Unleashes a burning ball of fire towards a target which explodes, damaging nearby foes.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Firestorm}}
| Flaming bolts rain down over the targeted area. They explode when landing, dealing damage to nearby enemies.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Ice Nova}}
| A chilling circle of ice expands from the caster.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Lightning Warp}}
| Casts a delayed teleport to a target destination. When the teleport occurs, lightning damage is dealt to the area around both where the player was and where they teleported to.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Righteous Fire}}
| Ignites you with magical fire that rapidly burns you and nearby enemies. Your spell damage is substantially increased while under this effect. The effect ends when you have 1 life remaining.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Shock Nova}}
| Casts a shocking ring of lightning which deals damage to monsters it touches. Monsters in the centre of the ring receive no damage.
|-
| align="left" | {{Sl|Storm Call}}
| Sets a marker at the target location, after a short duration lightning strikes the marker, dealing damage around it, when this happens it will also set off the lightning at any other marker you've cast.

There are currently 11 [[Curses|Curse skills]]:
A few mechanics apply a specific increase (usually expressed as an integer) to a dimension of the area of effect. For example, the skill gem level bonus for {{il|Caustic Arrow}} specifically grants a {{c|mod|+(0-6) to radius}} increase to the Caustic Arrow area of effect. These specific types of modifiers always apply before percentage-based modifiers are applied to the total area of effect. {{confirm}} This means that dimension-specific modifiers tend to have a greater impact on the area of effect's final size.

===Base Radius of all Skills===
==Calculations==
As of October 2013 when Mark_GGG decided to spill the beans before going on holidays, and searching the skill feedback forums. So information is missing on skills such as Reave and Flameblast.
Distances are displayed in metres, however all calculations are done using internal units equal to 0.1m. Any calculation that would produce a result that is not a multiple of 0.1m will be rounded down.

==Passives==
We can calculate the increased area of effect ({{Math|formula = AoE\%}}) required to increase a certain base radius {{Math|formula = r_b}} to a desired increased radius {{Math|formula = r_i}} using the formula for area of a circle:
There are [[passive skill]] nodes that grant bonuses to skills that have an area of effect.

===Radius of area skills===
{{Math|formula = \pi r_i^2 = \frac{100 + AoE\%}{100} \times \pi r_b^2 }}
These passives increase the radius of all skills with an area of effect.

{{passive table header}}
Cancelling out {{Math|formula = \pi}} and dividing both sides by {{Math|formula = r_b^2}} we get
{{:Area of Effect Radius|view=row}}
{{:Blast Radius|view=row}}
{{:Amplify|view=row}}
|}

===Radius of auras===
{{Math|formula = \frac{r_i^2}{r_b^2} = (\frac{r_i}{r_b})^2 = \frac{100 + AoE\%}{100} }}
These passives increase the radius of auras.

{{passive table header}}
Taking the square root of both sides shows that the proportion of the increased radius to the base radius is equal to the square root of the multiplier to area.

==Items that affect Area of Effect==

These items modify Area of Effect
{{item table|format=armour mods
|Carcass Jack}}
{{item table|format=weapon mods

==A list of some of the Radius sizes==
This suggests that an area's radius can be increased from '''28''' to '''30''' with 15% increased area of effect:
[https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/11707/page/226/#p5041495 Radius size according to Mark 2013-10-31]

{{Math|formula = (\frac{30}{28})^2 \approx 1.148 < \frac{100 + 15}{100} }}

'''However''', the square root of increased AoE is truncated to two decimal places before multiplying the radius, thus 15% increased AoE only results in a radius of

{{Math|formula = 28 \times \sqrt{ \frac{100 + 15\%}{100} } = 28 \times 1.07238 \approx 28 \times 1.07 = 29.96 }}

Similarly, {{Math|formula = \sqrt{ 1.16 } \approx 1.077}} is also truncated to 1.07, thus the breakpoint to increase a radius of 28 to 30 is '''17%''' increased AoE.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6I_AB32Aa4</ref>

==Mechanics with both AoE and non-AoE aspects==
Some mechanics' effects may have both AoE and non-AoE aspects. Modifiers that apply to "area of effect" will only apply to the AoE aspect of these mechanics.

* One example is a {{il|Fire Trap}} skill gem supported by an {{il|Increased Area of Effect Support}} gem. The trap has a trigger radius, meaning it will explode if an enemy moves into a circular area of ground around the trap. This trigger area does not create any effects on the enemy or anything else within the area, so it is not considered to be an "area of effect." The support gem will not increase the size of the trigger area. However, when the trap triggers, it produces a circular area of [[burning ground]] that damages enemies on it. That ''is'' an "area of effect," so the support gem will increase its size.

* Another example is {{il|Ancestral Warchief}}. The totem is only active when the character is standing within a given radius of it. Standing in this circle of ground activates the totem, but doesn't create any effects on anything else in the circle, so the circle is not an "area of effect." Adding an {{il|Increased Area of Effect Support}} gem will not allow the character to activate the totem from farther away. However, when the totem is active, it deals melee splash damage in an area around it, causing enemies in that area to take damage. This damaging area ''is'' an "area of effect," so the support gem will increase its size.

"wave" area of effect

Area of effect (often referred to as AoE) refers to mechanics (such as skills, auras, and monster abilities) that apply to an area of the ground (rather than targeting a particular character, monster, etc.).

Many AoE mechanics deal damage, but AoE mechanics can have other effects. For example, auras produce positive effects on allies within the area, while curses like Temporal ChainsTemporal ChainsSpell, AoE, Duration, Curse, Hex

targets a single monster rather than an area, so it is not an AoE skill, even though it creates piercing projectiles that can hit other nearby monsters as well.

Usage

The term "area of effect" or "AoE" is used in several different ways:

  • It can describe the mechanic itself. ("Molten StrikeMolten StrikeAttack, Projectile, AoE, Melee, Strike, Fire

How modifiers to AoE sizes work

Support gems and other mechanics can increase or decrease the size of an area of effect, almost always by a percentage, e.g. 30% increased Area of Effect. These percentages refer to the total amount of ground covered by the area of effect, not to the area of effect's radius, diameter, or other dimensions. For example, a 100% increased Area of Effect modifier applied to Shock NovaShock NovaSpell, AoE, Lightning, Nova
Level: (1-20)
Cost: (12-23) Mana
Cast Time: 0.70 sec
Critical Strike Chance: 6.00%
Effectiveness of Added Damage: 190%
AoE Radius: 26 / 14
Requires Level 28Casts a ring of Lightning around you, followed by a larger Lightning nova. Each effect hits enemies caught in their area with Lightning Damage.Deals (34-537) to (101-1610) Lightning Damage

's circular area of effect will double the area of ground covered by the circle. The mathematics of that mean that the circle's radius and diameter will increase by around 40%.

If multiple percentage-based modifiers apply to the same area of effect, they add together. For example, if 40% increased Area of Effect, 20% increased Area of Effect, and 30% decreased Area of Effect modifiers all apply to the same area of effect, the area of effect's size will increase by 30% (40+20-30).

A few mechanics apply a specific increase (usually expressed as an integer) to a dimension of the area of effect. For example, the skill gem level bonus for Caustic ArrowCaustic ArrowAttack, Projectile, AoE, Duration, Chaos, Bow
Level: (1-20)
Cost: (6-10) Mana
Attack Damage: (55-64)% of base
Effectiveness of Added Damage: (55-64)%
Projectile Speed: 3260
AoE Radius: 20
Fires an arrow which deals chaos damage in an area on impact, and spreads caustic ground. Enemies standing on the caustic ground take chaos damage over time.Deals (8.8-1927.1) Base Chaos Damage per second
Base duration is 2.00 seconds
Modifiers to Projectile Damage apply to this Skill's Damage Over Time effect
+(0-0.6) metres to radius
60% of Physical Damage Converted to Chaos Damage

specifically grants a +(0-6) to radius increase to the Caustic Arrow area of effect. These specific types of modifiers always apply before percentage-based modifiers are applied to the total area of effect. [confirmation needed] This means that dimension-specific modifiers tend to have a greater impact on the area of effect's final size.

Calculations

Distances are displayed in metres, however all calculations are done using internal units equal to 0.1m. Any calculation that would produce a result that is not a multiple of 0.1m will be rounded down.

We can calculate the increased area of effect () required to increase a certain base radius to a desired increased radius using the formula for area of a circle:

Cancelling out and dividing both sides by we get

Taking the square root of both sides shows that the proportion of the increased radius to the base radius is equal to the square root of the multiplier to area.

This suggests that an area's radius can be increased from 28 to 30 with 15% increased area of effect:

However, the square root of increased AoE is truncated to two decimal places before multiplying the radius, thus 15% increased AoE only results in a radius of

Similarly, is also truncated to 1.07, thus the breakpoint to increase a radius of 28 to 30 is 17% increased AoE.[1]

Mechanics with both AoE and non-AoE aspects

Some mechanics' effects may have both AoE and non-AoE aspects. Modifiers that apply to "area of effect" will only apply to the AoE aspect of these mechanics.

  • One example is a Fire TrapFire TrapTrap, Spell, Duration, AoE, Fire
    Level: (1-20)
    Cost: (8-20) Mana
    Cast Time: 1.00 sec
    Critical Strike Chance: 6.00%
    Effectiveness of Added Damage: 260%
    AoE Radius: 15
    Requires Level 12Throws a trap that explodes when triggered, dealing fire damage to surrounding enemies and leaving an area of burning ground that damages enemies who walk through it.Trap lasts 4 seconds
    Deals (32.5-3018.8) Base Fire Damage per second
    Base duration is 1.75 seconds
    Deals (10-915) to (15-1373) Fire Damage
    Modifiers to Spell Damage apply to this Skill's Damage Over Time effect
    +(0-0.8) metres to radius
    (3-286) to (5-429) added Fire Damage against Burning Enemies

    Requires Level 38Supports any skill with an area of effect.Supported Skills have (30-49)% increased Area of Effect

    Additional Effects From 1-20% Quality:
    Supported Skills deal (0.5-10)% increased Area Damage

    gem. The trap has a trigger radius, meaning it will explode if an enemy moves into a circular area of ground around the trap. This trigger area does not create any effects on the enemy or anything else within the area, so it is not considered to be an "area of effect." The support gem will not increase the size of the trigger area. However, when the trap triggers, it produces a circular area of burning ground that damages enemies on it. That is an "area of effect," so the support gem will increase its size.
  • Another example is Ancestral WarchiefAncestral WarchiefAttack, Totem, AoE, Slam, Melee
    Level: (1-20)
    Cost: 10 Mana
    Attack Speed: 90% of base
    Attack Damage: (110-166)% of base
    Effectiveness of Added Damage: (110-166)%
    Requires Level 28Summons an Ancestor Totem which attacks enemies with a powerful slam while you're near it. Being near it grants you more melee damage. Requires a Melee Weapon or Unarmed.Totem lasts 12 seconds
    Summons a Totem which uses this Skill
    (8-18)% more Melee Damage while Totem is Active
    50% increased Totem Placement speed
    +1 metre to Melee Strike Range

    Additional Effects From 1-20% Quality:
    (1.5-30)% increased Activation range

    . The totem is only active when the character is standing within a given radius of it. Standing in this circle of ground activates the totem, but doesn't create any effects on anything else in the circle, so the circle is not an "area of effect." Adding an Increased Area of Effect SupportIncreased Area of Effect SupportSupport, AoE

    Cost & Reservation Multiplier: 130%
    Requires Level 38Supports any skill with an area of effect.Supported Skills have (30-49)% increased Area of Effect

    Additional Effects From 1-20% Quality:
    Supported Skills deal (0.5-10)% increased Area Damage
    This is a Support Gem. It does not grant a bonus to your character, but to skills in sockets connected to it. Place into an item socket connected to a socket containing the Skill Gem you wish to augment. Right click to remove from a socket.
    gem will not allow the character to activate the totem from farther away. However, when the totem is active, it deals melee splash damage in an area around it, causing enemies in that area to take damage. This damaging area is an "area of effect," so the support gem will increase its size.

Version history

Version Changes
2.6.0
  • In this update, we are removing the concept of "Increased Radius of Area Skills" and replacing it with "Increased Area of Effect" for all skills, items and passives. The broad impact of this change is that early increases to area of effect will be significant and impactful, while every subsequent point will be less and less noticeable. Previously, each point spent towards increasing the radius of area skills was better than the last, making accumulation of the stat far too desirable.
0.8.1
  • Spell area of effect is slightly harder to obtain now.
0.6.8
  • Implemented skill area of effect boosts.
0.5.2
  • Fixed lag with area of effect damage.
