Tempests are a game mechanic introduced in the Tempest league. Tempests appear as small whirlwinds which appear for 4 seconds then detonate, applying their effect within their area. Tempests which give buffs apply it to both players and their allies and monsters within the area of effect, with a duration of 6 seconds. Multiple tempest buffs can apply on the one player but their effects do not stack, effectively just refreshing their duration. Tempests which cast damaging spells will damage both players and monsters.
Sources
Tempests are considered Extra Content, but do not have a base chance to spawn in areas. They can only be accessed via specific means.

- The "Corrupting Tempest" special map device crafting option from the Shaping the Skies Atlas passive adds Corrupting Tempests to the map.
- Vaal side areas can have the Area is affected by a Corrupting Tempest modifier.
- Incursion room controlled by Topotante, Architect of Storms adds a random Tempest to the present day Temple of Atzoatl. The chosen tempest depends on the room tier.
Tempests were also available via Prophecies (which have been removed from the game). It was also available as a map device craft when it was offered in the rotation. It was last made available in Version 2.3.0, and it did not return when via The Seventh Gate or in the pool of mods during version 3.24.0, indicating that it is unlikely it will ever return.

- In the Tempest league, Tempests were globally set for each area, and randomized hourly. Not all areas had a tempest each hour, but the chance for spawning one was 50%. Existing instance of an area retained old tempests. After the Tempest league ended, Tempests were not added to the core game. The Tempest mechanic were previously also accessible via prophecy.
